Can someone please help me. I installed windows XP last night and I run my desktop at 1280x1024 @ 85htz. When I am at my desktop everything is fine, but when I initiate any game it lowers my refresh rate way down until I exit the game then it is back to normal again. Anyone know what is happening here?
Thanks

AMD AthlonXP 1800+

You probably need the nVidia Refresh Rate Fix

Afterwards, run DXDIAG at the Start/Run line, and underneath the More Help tab, select the Override button. In this area, you can designate a preferred DirectDraw refresh rate.

Note: Be sure that you do not exceed your monitor's capabilities for your preferred resolution when setting the DirectDraw refresh rate. You could damage the monitor.

Thanks Tj...I will install it and see if it works...appreciate your help :)

Do you know of a test that determines your monitor's refresh rate capability? or where would I find such info? (cheap assed monitors don't usually boast about their refresh rates) 😉

If you tell me what monitor you've got, I might be able to locate the specifications for it. I'll need the brand name and model number.

If you've installed a specific monitor driver, then the refresh rates should be listed in the Settings/Advanced/Monitor tab in Display Properties.

As for a tool that helps you calibrate a monitor, DisplayMate is the only utility I think of, right at the moment.

For expert advice, I suggest you contact another of our Forum members, GoSharks (Jim Witkowski), who is the Chief Hardware Engineer at Cornerstone / MOnitorsdirect.com. You can either send him a private message, or contact him at Jim at http://www.monitorsdirect.com. He's a very helpful and knowledgable guy, and has forgotten more about monitors than some people ever learn!

How bout this LCD Expert: Do LCDs cease to function in 30ish degree temperature? or is it just the laptop itself? I've got one out in a building behind the house where the temp has been down to about 30 or so degrees and it wouldn't come on the other day... (problem is, i hadn't tried turning it on for many months prior).

Thanks,
Ret

I had similar problem, but then i install powerstrip and lets powerstrip lock the refresh rate for every resolution. You need to set it up first.

Hey, what's the deal with digging up old posts from last year when the problem was solved? I don't see the point.
