In regedit, I've heard that you can somehow do something there to change the way the start menu popups, as in, make it instantly popup in terms of speed. Anybody know this one?

You don't need to go to regedit to do this. Simply right click on the desktop and select properties. Click on the "effects" tab and deselect the "animate windoes menus and lists" item.
