I am looking to upgrade my system due to it being somewhat old and carrying a CPU bottleneck. I need some help seeing as how this is my first time upgrading a PC and it feels incredibly overwhelming to say the least. I bought my setup used from someone who built it about 3-4 years ago.

My setup:
i5 6500
EVGA GTX 1060 6gb
Asus Z170m-Plus mother board
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
WD 2TB HDD
DDR4 12GB Ram

So basically I think that I need to upgrade my CPU and unfortunately I feel somewhat limited in what CPUs that I could upgrade to that are compatible without having to upgrade the motherboard as well. I mean I could upgrade to maybe an i7 7600 but price is a factor for me and if I can avoid paying more than I really need to then I would like to avoid it. A friend of mine mentioned the Ryzen 3600x with a MSI Tomahawk motherboard but I just dont know what I should do really. Additionally I am constantly overthinking "will it fit my case" and really overthinking everything in general and its becoming a bit overwhelming to find a reasonable solution for a price that I am willing to pay. If anyone could help could help with any suggestions, Id really appreciate it.

Solution
So I have decided on upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Asus Prime B550m-A motherboard, 16gb DDR4, and 650 80+ GOLD power supply. The issue I am now having is if I should just upgrade my GPU or wait until I have more money. The GPU is a 1060 6gb so it is getting kind of old. Should I or should I just wait a while?
If you can afford one at MSRP and have the patience to wait for one to finally show up at that price, go for it. Otherwise you'll have to wait out the scalping storm.
At this point I would argue a CPU + mobo upgrade would be a better path here than trying to kit this out with the best CPU you can get (which would be an i7-7700K).

Going the AMD route would probably get you the best results, especially with something like a Ryzen 5 3600X and a B550 board. You can probably get a Ryzen 5 5600X instead but you have to make sure the board can either use it out of the box or has a way to update the UEFI firmware without a compatible CPU. You may also need to buy RAM since Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series CPUs work best with DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600.

As far as motherboard size goes, as long as it's a MicroATX or Mini-ITX, it'll fit. But that also depends on your case. You may have a Mid-ATX case, which can hold an ATX sized motherboard

yea I was thinking about that. Like I can make due with my GPU for the time being and Im willing to wait for prices to drop. I was just worried that my 1060 would be a major performance inhibitor but from what I have found, I can just make due for a while. Thanks for all the help btw.

No worries man, the 1060 is still a decently capable card even today. Just because the RTX 3070 and 3080 are blazing fast, it doesn't mean the older ones are getting weaker. You won't just be playing with ray tracing on for playable FPS. Otherwise, high settings all around at 1080p on a 1060 is still enjoyable.
