You can go look around the "Dangerous Brothers" for hacked firmware or check
out the firmware forum on "CD Freaks". Flash your firmware at your own
risk.

Own risk means :
- it may not work
- even if it works, it will void drive warranty. May be not worth the
feature if it happens to fail before end of warranty period...

Is there any other I can play my DVDs? I have a number of different formats
and continually changing will lock my drive to one region.

Get a different drive for each region code...

Easy. Get yourself a (free, see doom9.org) copy of DVDdecrypter and
rip the DVD to your hard drive. It can remove the region code and
Macrovision.

I've converted a few drives to region-free with firmware from rpc1.org
without any problem at all.

It isn't that easy. If the disc is a different code, the drive won't read
it. So DVDdecrypter won't work.

I also had no problems with 2 dvd dell burners flashing them into region
free.

Good advice - I flashed my Toshiba DVD/ROM drive a couple of years ago.
It made it region free, but certain DVDs wouldn't play anymore - watch
out for unintended consequences.

Any way to back up the current firmware?
