Removing all calls to a Secondary HDD after failure

About 6 months ago I put a SSD in my tower for Windows 7 and used my previous HDD for data. I made this change as I thought the HDD was showing signs of failure.

I thought I had followed a guide from tomshardware to move windows desktop, libraries, etc. to the HDD, but have since been unable to find said guide. I know there are such guides, but I haven't found the one I recall using. The reason I have been looking for it is to reverse what I did because the HDD has failed.

I can not boot the tower with the HDD installed, it crashes on startup and prompts for startup recovery. Startup recovery was unable to fix the issue. If I unplug the HDD it boots just fine with the exception of a few errors when Windows looks for the HDD. The desktop settings and the default install location were on the HDD. Now Windows gives on error on startup saying it can not find the desktop, so it loads a generic. Also, some programs do not offer the option to choose install drive, so their install fails when calculating disk space as the disk they are looking for does not exist.

As for data/settings recovery, I'm not overly concerned. I have any important information backed up elsewhere. My concern is trying to remove any calls to the HDD that still exist within Windows. Primarily the default install location for programs, desktop configuration/settings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately not. It may have been a guide on a different site. In hindsight, I wish that were the process I followed because it seems simpler and I probably wouldn't be where I am now. 😉 On a related note, I have checked both registry keys for ProgramFilesDir and they are directed to my SSD.
