Hello, i'm a newbie when it comes to computers. I have a lenovo z50 laptop that i want enhance so i can have a better gaming experience so im trying to see if i can add a powerful graphic card. I know that it is possible to replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. But i was wondering whether the SATA connecter for the DVD drive can be used to connect a graphic card similarly to the way the Ultrabay port on the Lenovo Thinkpad series can connect a graphic card? Or is there an adapter to be used or maybe if i can replace my DVD drive with an Ultrabay port?

Appreciate the help

Graphics would normally connect with a pci-e connector that has a much higher bandwidth than a SATA connector .
And unfortunately thats only the beginning of the issues you would face . Almost certainly what you want to do is impossible .

Some people have set up external graphics cards for laptops though using smoke , mirrors and alchemy . And they totally under perform .
Again almost certainly not worth doing even if it is possible .

Sorry i couldnt be more helpful but I doubt there is a way for you to achieve this

I see; but from what i understand, SATA connectors tend to have a bandwidth of up 6GB/s max, and pci-e connectors go up to 40GB/s or something. Given that, what is the point of having SATA to pci-e adapters if they are automatically going to bottleneck?

If you go on Banggood.com and look up the EXP Beast, it is an external PCI-E slot for a Graphics Card. If you were to buy a GTX 750 Ti or something that required no power, you would be able to have an external graphics card without purchasing a power supply. If you have a ExpressCard or Mini PCIe Slot in your laptop, this would be perfect for your system. It will run you about $50.
