I have a PC that I built several years ago (still very much an amateur), and have recently bought a new SSD. The PC has three HDD's, the c: drive has Windows 7 and programs only. I would like to disconnect this drive, replace it with the SSD, and install a clean Windows 7.

  • I have the original Windows 7 OS CD (OEM), and want to do a clean install on the SSD. Can I install on the new drive with the same product key?

After I get the new SSD (and two other HDD's) setup, can I re-connect the "old" HDD (which would still have Windows 7 installed)? Can I then uninstall Windows 7 from that drive?

With this change, is there any concern about losing data on the other two HDD's (have online backup)?

Any other help/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any expertise!

Yes, you can disconnect the HDD, replace it with the SSD, and clean install Win7 using the same product key. As you probably already know, all the pgms. that were installed originally will have to be re-installed again. The other HDDs will not be affected in any way unless they contain pgms used by Win7. However, it is always best to disconnect the other drives during the installation of Win7 to the SSD to avoid the possibility of the MBR being written to one of them instead of the SSD.
