Hello, this is going to be a long one, but I would greatly appreciate any kind of technical guidance.

Recently I purchased an ASUS K501UX. The laptop can be maxed out to 12 GB RAM (I do a lot of digital artwork on Photoshop and the program eats up ram like candy), so I purchased a Crucial 8GB 1600 Single DDR3L 1600 MT/s stick (what crucial.com deemed was compatible) and replaced it with the removable stick (Samsung 4GB 1RX8 12800S). Updated BIOS.

Made sure that it was fitted in properly (at an angle and fastened with a click). Turned on the laptop and got nothing at first but the power light. After maybe a minute or so, black screen. I notice that a light doesn't lighten up like it does with old ram (which still works, swapped them out and back again.)

Seemed that BIOS recognized the new RAM since there was 12gb of memory listed instead of 8. After restarting either fet a black screen with" (A7) me FW downgrade - request mespilock failed" or the blue Advanced Settings option. Made it to the desktop only once or twice before crashing.

Could it be that I have to configure voltage/speed/etc or did I get a bad stick of ram? Is there anything else to be done?

Solution
Try swapping the 8gb stick with the other one. I've had that happen before where only one dimm will take the 8gb and the other one won't with those 12gb limited laptops
