replaced monitor but get error message

I had to replace my old monitor, and when I hook up the
new one and try to boot up, I receive an error message on
a black screen stating,"not optimum mode, recommended
mode:1280 X 1024 60Hz." How can I get to the control
panel to change it. I have windows xp, and a ATI Radeon
9600SE AGp card. I know it was set at a high resolution
while using the old monitor, what exactly I don't
remember.

I'm stuck!!!!

Boot to safe mode, open display properties by right clicking
on the desktop. Select properties. Then Settings. Safe
mode will be 640x480 or 800x600 so it will look strange.
Reset to something reasonable, like 1024x768 80 Hz.
The reboot and open device manager and check the settings
and drivers for the display adapter/graphics card and also
check the monitor to update the plug and play file. Once
you have the monitor correctly identified the graphics
should offer the correct settings.

Also sounds like a nice monitor there. Check the DCC information too.
Also make sure to update your video card drivesr. ATI just released
Catalyst 4.7 drivers. http://www.ati.com/home/online/CatalystXPdriver.html

ATI has drivers loaded for your old monitor...

Go into safe mode > control panel > add remove programs >
remove the ATI drivers and ATI control panel. Reboot and then
install the latest catalyst drivers from ATI.

No need to go into Safe Mode to uninstall. Just use this utility from
ATI to clean off all ATI files from the computer:
