Hi all,

My partner's Alienware 17 gaming laptop ( purchased march '14) has just given out and I've managed to narrow the issue down to the GPU or so I believe.

I've attempted a number of fixes including a system roll back as the card recently had new drivers installed. I've only been able to attempt this in safe mode as booting windows 10 normally just presents a black screen.

I've found a potential donor card on ebay, however I'm not 100% sure if this would be compatible.

On the face of it this does look to be the card to go for but I've not had any experience with MXM GPU's so I'm looking for some guidance as there are a few visual difference I can see such as the card version and crossfire port (I think)

Are any of you fine people able to confirm if these cards would be a match, below I've included images which will hopefully help as well as the sellers description.

Thanks :)

Possible Replacement:

Ebay description:

AMD R9 M290X/8970M - MXM GPU - Laptop Graphics Card - Alienware 17 18 Crossfire

AMD Radeon R9 M290X (8970M)
4GB VRAM
Crossfire compatible

You have to make sure of the requirements:
  1. MXM Port
  2. Compatible heatsink
  3. Drivers
  4. PSU with sufficient power

Due to the nature of eBay, I will not be held responsible for users who bought this and found it was incompatible so please do your research. I don't know what specific laptops this will fit. It was removed from an Alienware 18

Well I tossed that model number into the old google and pretty much that replacement card you are looking at came up.

Only difference I can see if that the old one doesn't have the cable port, but surely having it won't hurt anything.

I would say you are good to try it.
