Replacing chipset fan on DFI NF4 Ultra-D

This fan is very noisy and annoying.

How would I go about replacing it? What would I replace it with. I want something much quieter. This fan just whines and whines.

Thanks.

If you look at the picture you'll see that both slots are in the way of the current fan so I'll need something slightly different to avoid bumping into it if I use the second slot.

The Iceburq actually had some negative reviews for my board where the temps actually rose compared to the stock cooler. Also, it's a bit high. I ended up ordering the Evercool VC-RE. People ranted and raved about it at dfi-street so I should be ok. I'll let you know how it goes.

Check out jab-tech too. But they don't show if it's in stock or not. I got mine from adpmods.com, in Windsor, ON, CA.

The Iceburq weighs about 20g or so less and the fan pushes about half the amount of air as the Evercool does. So even if you have to wait a week or two I would stick with trying to get the Evercool. In BIOS I have the NB fan to spin at full speed at 52C, I have yet to hear the thing spin up. Unfortunately that's about the best experience I can say I've had with the DFI Ultra-D though :x

Just thought I'd follow up on this. I did get it and I installed it. Installation isn't the easiest since I couldn't poke the pins back through the holes with the old fan. Instead I took pliers, crushed the ends, and used toenail clippers to cut the plastic pins off.

It looked like they used a really cheap thermal pad on the die and it was only about half covered. I applied some Arctic Silver III and put the new fan on. To get it on though is a bit cumbersome since the holes don't align perfectly. You kind of have to put one pin in first and then bend the other plastic pin into place.

All in all, it's about 15 minutes of work. A bit more taking the motherboard out and putting it back in. My temps dropped a few degrees as did the noise. If you like pretty colors you might like the way this thing looks too.

Man you're slow 😛 They're already movin' on to the next big thing 😉

Usually for the pushpins, I like using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Give a lil squeeze and works perfect.
