Replaying Adventure Games

Just wondering if anyone has 1 or 2 games that they seem to replay at least
once a year. Those games that you haven't thought about in a while then
something triggers your memory and you can't wait to break it out and sit
down and play.

There are two that I have replayed many times and almost enjoy them as much
now as the first time we played them (although I do miss the trying to
figure things out, etc.).

What games have you played that are like this and what are your favorite
parts.

Mine are:

Gabriel Knight I - Sins of the Father - Of course I enjoyed the entire
game - liked the music, plot, puzzles and even liked the narrator. My
favorite part was the 1st few days when Gabriel is researching Voodoo in the
Quarter and visits the Dixi Land Drug Store, Madame Moon Beam, Dr. John,
etc.

Gabriel Knight II - The Beast Within - Again, the entire game is fantastic
but I enjoyed playing Grace. It was fun to do the background work on Ludwig
and Wagner and learn about that aspect of the game.

Thanks in advance.

I quite often play through my favourite sequences in Beneath A Steel Sky,
sometimes just for the beautiful music. I dip into LucasArts adventures
from time to time, but usually for only quarter of an hour or so, with the
exception of Grim Fandango which I can sometimes play through up to two
consecutive acts. Sometimes I try RealMYST or Riven in a vain attempt to
reexperience the original joy and wonder I felt the first time I began
those adventures, although I never replay Myst III or IV, which have no
replay value. Riven, and to a slightly lesser extent Myst, are always
enjoyable because of the rich atmosphere, though the experience is nowhere
near as intense as the first time because the mystery is gone. I also have
a saved game kept for every possible ending, because all the ending movies
are fun to watch!

Games I own, have finished and would dearly love to replay but currently
cannot because of technological problems currently include Toonstruck,
Alone in the Dark, Space Quest 4 and 5, The Gene Machine, Mission Critical
and Discworld 1.

I'd also like to have another bash at The Daedalus Encounter, but I don't
have a copy, and while it's quite beautiful the game has sufficient flaws
to be not worth actually buying.

I know what you mean about technical difficulties. One of the first 2 games
we played were Star Trek Judgment Rites and 25th Anniversary - played on a
Pentium 100 bootable to DOS. Unfortunately, on my current system, I cannot
get either of these to run. Would love to replay those. Enjoyed all the
Lucas Arts games (Monkey Island 1-3, 4 was ok), Indiana Jones - FOA, Sam and
Max and Day of the Tentacle. Only have tried Monkey Island 3 on XP so far
and that works great. Haven't tried the rest. I know I can download the
VMSCUMM but not sure how to use it.

Good Luck.

Those were great games. May have to pull them out now and replay them.
Hopefully can get them to work.

Thanks.

I'd give it a try, ScummVM is actually quite easy to use. It should work
out of the box, (or out of the zip file, at any rate;-) and you can tweak
it later in order to improve it - though the only real tweak needed is to
enable the graphics filters (which, whenn you choose the correct one, are
simply phenomenal - they can make Monkey 1 look almost as good as Monkey
3!).

I'd also suggest DOSBOX, an emulator designed expressly for dos gamers.
It's very inefficient, I've got a 1.3 Duron and Dosbox can barely manage to
emulate a 386 on that despite it being around 10 times slower, but it's
still a work in progress and could improve given time. It's usually
adequate for playing games from the early DOS era (as a rule of thumb,
generally games old enough that they don't use dos4gw), but can't cope with
things like, say, Mission Critical in high res, hence my difficulty. I am
an enthusiastic gamer, but I am also an engineer and I refuse to shell out
an arm and a leg for a 3Ghz processor just to emulate a poxy 486 because my
actual hardware wont work with dos. It wouldn't exactly be an elegant
solution to the problem.

Solitaire

....or if you're talking about adventure games...

None at least once a year.
The ones I replay most often are Myst and Shivers.
Myst in all its incarnations - original Myst, Myst Masterpiece,
RealMyst. I haven't gotten around to Myst for Playstation yet,
but that's coming.
Also I've replayed the original Tomb Raider twice.
Strangely enough, these are my first 3 adventure games
(more like action/adventure in the case of Tomb Raider).

I've replayed Myst III: Exile twice, but that was three
times in a row. After uninstalling it I haven't replayed it.
I've replayed TLJ twice.
There are just too many games I've collected but haven't
played yet for me to replay very much. Myst and Shivers
are relatively short, which is why I'll sometimes pull
them out to play between other games.

Depending on what OS you mean, at least both work without any
problems under WinXP.

Thanks. I can't believe I forgot about the Tex Murphy games. Those were
great.

Now that everyone is reminding me of all the fantastic games we played over
the past 10 years or so I'm going to have to try all of them. It's obvious
that I am going to have to quit my job and put my time to more constructive
use :p

Does anyone know how to play Monkey Island 4 on a Pentium 4? The
install fails with "insufficient system resources" and shows the
system speed as zero (minimum required 200Hz). The actual speed is
3GHz.

It was a great game. We played it when it first came out - always like the
Lucas Adventures. A while back we tried to play it on a system with Windows
ME and kept locking up.

Try a PC slowdown program and see if the game can detect the
processor speed when it's reduced to 50%.

The story is just one of the best I've seen in any media.

I enjoyed Full Throttle, too, though it was a short game -- I can't wait for
Psychonauts. (Yes, I know it's a 3rd person adventure/platformer, but Tim
Schafer just pushes my buttons.)

You could try turning off the hyper-threading thinger?
(I've heard rumours it makes some games go whacky)

That's a new approach to coping with games that require action on the
gamer's part: Let the game designer push the buttons! ;-) I should
invite Michel Ancel so I can finish Beyond Good and Evil...

I'll probably get Psychonauts, too, but I like platformers. I'm
probably a bit strange, but it's the only genre I *really* like besides
adventure games.

I was just talking to my sister tonight about 7th Guest and 11th Hour. Did
you try 7th Guest under XP? Just wondering if it worked.

Also, has anyone been to the below site:

Done very well. Each room has something different pertaining to adventure
games. For example the sewing room has patches for several adventure games.
The ballroom has music from different games. Other rooms have screen shots,
walkthru's etc.

Thanks.

Only a bit strange. I'm mostly in the same boat. I also play
whattheycall "action games", but I prefer the ones which have a lot of
platform-style action.

Psychonauts is on my list of "watch for this to come out, it might be
worth buying".

I'm still thinking about what to put in this space.

The Secret of Monkey Island would be the only adventure game I
continuously return to year after year. When Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade first came out I replayed that three or four times over the span
of a few years; however, as my collection grew I never returned to it
nor many of the other great titles I've acquired over the years.

I'm just now getting around to finishing up Indiana Jones and the Fate
of Atlantis. I'll keep this for another run along one of its other plot
branches.

The only other adventure game I've replayed more than once has been Grim
Fandango. It's long past time for me to take it out for another spin.
