x86 is so wide-spread that even if it went to court, AMD would win, it's almost the same as the "Netbook" situation.

On the other hand, the newer technologies that AMD owns and licenses to Intel would hurt them far more.

Regardless of whether or not AMD breached the agreement, Intel needs AMD and AMD needs Intel, and we all need them both. The only logical option with a shure-fire chance of having a good outcome is AMD winning this.

Easy come out with an open standard for processor instructions. Linux/Microsoft forced to recompile for said standard. Any vendor can then developer hardware for said standards. US Patents are the real problem

Could take a while to develop an open standard for processor isntructions, let alone design, test, and fabricate processors based on them. X86 would have to be emulated, too, or else 99% of all programs won't work. Both of these cause massive issues, including slowing technology's progress and probably losing large amounts of performance, but bring the possibility of others entering what is now a very closed market (x86).

Here is your quote of the day. An industry standard instruction set would open the flood gates of innovation. Intel is keeping companies out of the processor market with its long aged patent rights. We the consumers are in a losing situation.

All I can say is if this cross licence agreement falls through then we're in for some interesting times for CPUs. Not sure if people appreciate the effect this has on AMD because they will have to re-engineer a brand new cpu instruction set. It took Intel about 10 years of work on IA-64 and it still flopped big time and god knows how long x86 took. So if AMD loses x86 and doesn't have something up their sleeve they will be out for the count. Intel wont be unaffected either as all their 64bit instructions are licenced from AMD and you can bet an Itanium based core i7 wont be as good as the one we have now.

This is ridiculus. Intel is just pressuring AMD in hopes that AMD will drop their anti-trust lawsuit against them as a settlement. I'm not sure many people remember this but Intel lost a 10 billion dollar lawsuit to Digital Equipment Coropration back in the 90's for illegally copying parts of the Alpha processor. Imagine how much AMD would win today if successful with their lawsuit.

I full agree with the open standard proposal. Intel is hiding behind a two decades design, and is destroying healthy competition from VIA or NVidia.

As for Intels roars, I think Microsoft managed to screw Intel for good, by adopting so fast AMD's 64bit technology in their 64bit version of Windows (and not the Itanium stupid design). Nice work Bill!

If Intel and AMD keeps going down this path of mutual self destruction, we as consumers will be the one that gets screwed. Personally, if it were to go into litigation, i hope AMD wins it.

I fear AMD will be on the losing hand here.
It would be sad to see that yet another legal costfor them could drive them again deeper into obscurity.
I wish they would win,for that would mean serious competition for Intel!

Or perhaps it would mean a different, more modern type of processor structure could be build.
The x86 structure is pretty old. Perhaps if looked deeper upon, it could be improved and resulting in another processor structure perhaps much more efficient for current os'es.

Perhaps even then MS will creat compatibility for x86 and the new standard. But seeing how much work it was creating this x86 standard, it would take another Einstein or bill gates to create a different processor structure.

It seems pretty hard to believe how AMD needs to pay Intel royalties, and still manages to create processors with a lower pricetag than Intel!

ohh, if AMD goes down, we will stuck with single core 32 bit processors with a max of 4gb?
wich means 99% of all intel processors from the Pentium4D till corei7, and half xeons will go down.Cool, it means my phenome processor will have a 20000$ price, because it will be one of the rare 64bit quad core processors sold on ebay.
What i really think, its a verry bad move from intel, its killing the technologies.
I think that the only move that will kick Intel ass, is that IBM buys AMD, then, all this shit will be out of question. Giving, Amd a better image, using thire technologie for better purposes.

I think we will see that again.
Go AMD, you are the most inovative, Intels money can desapear in seconds.
I will stick on AMD processors, and hope for a new comer wich will be: IBM/AMD/ATI all together in a single company.

I love both companies for the varies cpus they have produced over the years. So i'm not a fanboy in either dept. I do think that a huge company like intel, that's had no (upper-end-cpu) competition in 3 years should back down and just be happy with what they have.

They are just being greedy. AMD has been in dept for along time, and they are doing there best to fight the good fight and bounce back. both in the minds of enthusiasts, and financially.

I currently have a Q9550 intel processor. I picked it because intel cpu's for the moment, are unmatched by AMD.

But if intel goes after AMD for this very petty, (oh know, they are making more money now) garbage, I will side with AMD and I will root for them.

Intel needs to just fight fairly, stop being petty, and just focus on making good cpus for everyone. Leave AMD alone!

-That would open the gates for other companies to develope there own x86 processors.
-We the consumers will be able to get better pricing and technology.
-Intel can will get the taste smacked out of it's mouth and finally wake up and start realizing that they are not above the law.

If Intel Wins
