This resembles their APU naming conventions, except for only having 3 digits for the model number itself. I'm guessing they want people to easily recognize that R9 > R8 > R7 just like A10 > A8 > A6 > A4. For enthusiasts it doesn't really matter, except that the new system will take a little while to get used to.

Unless they plan on extending the designations to 4 digits once they hit the 900 series, they're going to run into the same problem they have with the HD series, and the radeons before that.

Why not just stick with the series names and a fixed set of numbers to indicate where the card falls within the series? This would be much easier to maintain.

Volcanic Islands 1xx (low end) up to 9xx (high end)

next year, you could bring out the "Seismic Peninsula" series 1xx to 9xx., or the "Tsunami Coastline" series.

Or they could go way outside the box and forego the geological disaster/geologic feature naming convention altogether!

AMD already released Radeon 7000,8000, and 9000 in the early 2000s. The Radeon 9000 series was very popular so it may be confusing
