Why? For who's benefit?
They paid $1.2 billion, even if they don't use WebOS they get to own all the IP and patents which is worth some of the money they spent.
If they open-source it they will fully piss away that $1.2 billion.
...
The answer of course is because you want it, even though it means nothing as every OS is provided free with it's device and the hardware cost subsidises the software ... and before you say Android some of that hardware cost pays $15 to Microsoft for Android.

WebOS is great. trying to get a hold of a palm pre or veer now that I have my touchpad 😉. In your face Apple !

I think its retarded that Netflix website does not use Adobe flash, if it did, then I could watch Netflix with no problem threw the web browser. I can already watch videos/movies/tv shows threw my fav stations tv online which is cool.

They are not going to throw away WebOS, the X ceo was a software guy, and WebOS is software. So he was never going to cancel WebOS, just hte devices. What good is a software company with no software to sell? He was trying to change HP into a software / service company mostly for big buisness.

Buisness don't mind, as long as it does what they need it for. So it doesn't need to run everything or have every app, as long as it has the apps they need to be productive, or database access they need. He did buy a database company before getting fired.

But he was a stupid ceo, executed stuff too fast and killed HP share price. So I can understand what he wanted, but the hardware aspect of HP is a big part of HP so its not a good idea to kill that off without killing HP's name and stock.

HP is not money hungry now, just a few of the investors that should be shot. Saying they will kill WebOS, will only kill WebOS resale value or license cost if they were try to sell it/license it to someone else, hurting their share price and investment in WebOS. Not every company wants to be reliant on Microsoft/Goodgle etc. ANd its good to stand on your own feet.

THis went out to all WebOS developers in Aug:

HP webOS Developer Update

Dear webOS Developer,

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP.
This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

Richard Kerris
VP webOS Developer Relations

Reporting this only serves to turn the blade: once my N900 bites it I will have no proper Linux phone to play with anymore, I'll probably just bite the bullet and get a root-able android, at least the kernel, modules, and somewhat the ABI are similar

License it for a dollar a copy to the chinese cheap tablet market, they'll get more users than android and ios in a year :) lol

I doubt devs who worked on webos will find it hard getting a job in this industry

I heard from inside HP that the decision was made to continue WebOS after all. Lets wait and see...
