[citation][nom]jimishtar[/nom]I wouldnt buy 5850 nor gtx 480 or amd x3. i dont care about brand/manufacturer, what I care about is a 100% healthy, 100% able hardware. its like buying a v6 car with 2 disabled pistons. just doesnt sound right, does it ?[/citation]
you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

I think the bigger story here is their yield, 50% is really freikin fail, any industry yield under 95% is doing piss poor, this jsut goes to show you what the scanners/tracks/implant machines do, they are using gloabal foundries i think, and they use ASML's...ya crap yield is a bad sign...

I remember the comments for the 200 series, that it would be too hot and too expencive and so on. Fact is it turned out pretty good, ran cooler than the 4000 series from ati, also the top end was more powerful card. It will be the same here, the 480 will be a lot faster than the 5870, comparable to the X2 version of the 5870, so the power and heat should be put in that perspective. I think Nvidia will rule the high end for some time more and i have high hopes for physx, it will create a new dimension to gaming that i for one long for.

The reality is, LOTS of technology is built with imperfections built in. NAND Flash found in most SSDs is a perfect example. It not only comes with lots of broken flash, it breaks as you use it. SSDs reallocate data to avoid these broken areas. Simple.

There is no issue with NVIDIA disabling cores. Even if the chip you get has broken cores, they are disabled, so the card functions perfectly. If NVIDIA actually filtered out all the chips that had 100% of their cores functional, you would end up with next to no chips. Disabling cores is the only realistically economical way that NVIDIA can produce any Fermi cards in the near future.

Why does anyone have problems with it?

[citation][nom]tester24[/nom]Also with the cores disabled isn't it like false advertisement if they sell them as 480s and 470s?[/citation]
haha seriously?

The only thing I dont understand about the gtx480 is why nvidia's flagship gpu would have disabled cores. I have yet to hear of a flagship gpu that comes crippled out of the box. Yes, all the rest of the gpus and cpus that were previously mentioned are crippled versions of the flagship gpu, but they also come at a lower price tier. If I were to buy nvidia in the near future, I would wait till the 485 comes out with all the cores enabled and then buy the 480 which (hopefully) should go down in price.

[citation][nom]jimishtar[/nom]why would someone buy a brand new vga with disabled cores on it ?[/citation]

Probably the same reason people buy CPU's with disabled cores. They're a lower price point.

I think they will save the ones that actually have a good and pure 512 core count for the first workstation cards. Anything with a 1% to 10% core failure will be the 480 or 470. Anything less than that will be lesser cards like a 430? That would be interesting though if they actually had to put the actual number of functioning cores on the side of the box. I am sure they know the number. They would have to in order to bin them accordingly.

Well 1st of all Fermi its an amazing coming product.
2nd i own a system with one of the best confirm on AMD eyefinity and buch of stuff with windows 7 64 bits. etc etc nice rig. ( 5760X1200) with bezel compensation in compatible games.
3rd GPUs are pretty much capable of nice graphics, and features as DX9, DX10 and DX11 are good but far for perfect, from each other. even XBox, Ps3 or what ever S@#t you can think off.
4d Nvidia will be good for everyone. Maybe its not for you.

Facts

Nvidia 3d (meh) 3d is good but only at some point.
Nvidia will be overpricer at launch.
A Lot of people already have an ATI solution running with eyefinity and good FPS, no need to change. ( maybe try out )
I would love to see nvidia with a bunch of FPS and new performance charts.

At the end

Nvidia is the way to s...? lol no p0lay games also. Invidia in fact does its job, not this round but they still bring some to the table.

Now Lets and see.

I don't know why no one has mentioned it but if they didn't sell the lower end parts with disabled cores, if they just threw away the ones with bad cores, then the perfect ones which would be left over would cost maybe twice as much. I don't know about you but I don't want to spend $1000 for CPUs and $1000 for a GPU. AMD and NVidia and INtel pay for those cards and wafers whether they sell them or not. If they don't sell them, they need to spread that cost to the ones that they do sell.

[citation][nom]saint19[/nom]Well, just five days to know the true about Fermi and his performance, lets see how many of that nVidia "bad" news are true.[/citation]
[citation][nom]yannifb[/nom]You think the 480 card supply outnumbers ATI's 58xx series 2:1? I guess thats why Nvidia said availability will be scarce till April 6.[/citation]

LOL You gotta love this whole crap fest everyone is having with Nvidia , I mean come on it is by far the most entertainning thing for a long time now.
Some people out there seem to know then Nvidia its self when it comes to availabilty of there cards......

I dont think there will be any Massive things going on except for how Massive the Fermi chip is.

Also lets not forget........
For a Company's Leader to stand up before many and say " This puppy here is Fermi" only to later admit it was FAKE is just plain crazy ass funny as hell. Then on top of that we have multiple reports of a release date that just keeps moving everytime they anounce Fermi will be released !!
Finally now ( thank God ) here we are 6-7 months later and we will FINALY get to see what Nvidia should have had out to Market half a year ago. I in all my honesty hope that is decent so that ATI will lower prices and I can finally get my 5870 or 5970.
The only sad thing about all this is once Fermi is bench FINALLY ! , all the mystery out of all this will be past tense. We then can finally go back to bashing one Company or the other.

:)

[citation][nom]blue shift[/nom]Everyone, calm down. This same rumor has cropped up several timnes over the past few months, and nV has NOT stated that the 480 will have any fewer than 512 cores.[/citation]

LMAO .... uh your are kidding right ?

There is no HOPE, No Hope....Nvidia's releasing a 512 core card. Not anytime soon. There many more people in the know that have better sources then any of us here and they are stating the 480 will have 480 cores.

[citation][nom]megamanx00[/nom]It's already been said that nVidia will only release the 512 core enabled G300 chip as a Tesla card. I'm pretty sure the rumored[/citation]

Yep.
What some of the others here don't realise is that Nvidia is not releasing th 480 with only 480 cores/shaders simply because it ( they ) can not get the card ro run cool enough with ALL 512 cores running ( like others here have already stated) and not too mention that they are having ( or TSMC to be clear ) issues making the wafers with no defects or errors.
One of MANY sites people should just read up on, not to mention Nvida is admitting it is have a problem with it.

OMG, puke! puke!! barf! barf!! WTF Nvidia, i loved you yesterday, now its over, i want my house key back, you need to take your shit and go. 50% yeild = GROSS! Well i won't be buying an Nvidia this time around. Maybe after a revision or the next GPU. Whatever makes more sense at the time. Or maybe ill just have to deal with ATi's weak software from here on out. Hope their Microsoft lawsuit doesn't back fire as well, ouch!

I kind of feel bad for Nvidia with all these issues, that is if the reports are factual. I will be happy when they are out and the reviews start so everyone can put a stop to the hearsay about performance and issues.

I know this is long ago but did someone really seriously say that intel uses one fab lmao dude your really lost than because as a former employee of Intel i can promise you they have no less than 10 fabs in america alone and that they produce there processors all over the world go to Fry's and take a look at the boxes most of them are in maylasia or phillipines but some are produced in america just hard to find them

Microsofts Lawsuit ? Uh do you mean INTEL don't you? I dont think Nvidia are in any kind of suit with MS. I anyone knows better please post.
As for ATI's drivers or the lack of ATI taking the drivers and gaming issue seriously that has all changed. AMD now have committed a whole seperate division devoted to making sure ATI stays on top of things like Drivers and pushing developers for better Gaming.

All that is missing is for Nvidia to release the DAM card so HOPEFULLY , (please god) Fermi is decent and ATI will lower the prices on it's Cards .
I really want a 5870 or even a 5970. Just a tad too much $$ right now.

I think they were asking why Nvidia just doesnt ASK Intel to make it's chip instead of TSMC at 1 of its Fabs , at least that is how I read it.
Of course Intel is not short of Fabs by any means and they would Never let anyone use it Fab for anything but there own products.
That aint happenning.

Uh, Applies to both the 5850 AND the 5830.

Please don't "fix" my posts when they are right.

And I used the 5850 as my example because the 5850 is the much stronger GPU, for only 40$-50$ more.
