Allow you too see what additional program you are trying to run while still being able to see what is on the present screen. (Maybe you are following a tutorial off the web or such)

That 'button' exists. It's called Ex7forW8. Let's you switch between Win 7 and Win 8 shells just by logging off and on. When using Win 7 shell, the Metro UI is not even loaded in memory.

" Honestly its not that bad." funny how almost every pro-win8 user says that. Which to me, speaks volumes.

Not buying any "windows" higher than 7... ever. Already going Linux on some of my desktops.

So I need a thrid party program? That isnt windows having the option, this is someone hating the win 8 interface enough to create a work around. Not at any point is it acceptable that I need additional software to make an OS function the way I want. I have never had a problem moving from 98 - ME - XP - WIN 7. Never needed additional software there, the OS functioned as I wanted (ME excluded, but that is a different arguement). If i need ex7forw8 then MS has failed.

oh and back_by_demand, you are on a technology website so I can only hope you are slightly intelligent/geeky/nerdy meaning you have some ability when it comes to computing. that said you may enjoy the improved performance, stability and security of win 8, good on ya, but for the generatl population that are..... "less savy" they want what they have always had, classical desktop, start menu, windowed applications, no metro interface, no additional configuration to get what they want. This is why windows 8 has not done well, most users are as you say "ignorant users". and no i didnt know about the desktop button, but from what I read, its not gonna be a true classical desktop experience anyways so I fail to see the point

About changes to the UI, does the new windows 8 have Advanced appearance settings... ?

Yes yes yes, uniformed experience for all users, like Apple. That's why I don't like Apple.
Customization has always been a strong point for Windows.

I will keep complaining. It is in my nature to want something better, not something worse, as time goes on.
I want full compatibility with old hardware and software. Full customizations. Full support for games of the past and future and not like new directx being restricted to new windows just because they can do it.
I will complain. And I will vote with my wallet.
You should do that too.
Cheers!

Actually it just installs components from Windows 7. You can see that as an additional fail or you can see it as not actually 'using' a third party application. It doesn't run in the background like other applications. Anyway I am enjoying Windows 7.5 😛

My argument isnt that it cant be made to look and act like 7, obviously it can, and ex7forw8 isnt the first to do it. My point is that MS failed to deliver an OS that the majority of people are even interested in using and the 8.1 "improvements" are hardly improvements. Booting to desktop is fine, tried that feature out, but this imitation start button/menu thing, thats an abortion. What MS should of done is was what ex7forw8 does, and that is give users the option, classic or metro.

I also want to reiterate, I do not question windows 8 performance, stability and security, just metro and imitation start menus

I totally agree with you. I wouldn't have upgraded to 8 if there was no option to switch interface.
