Researching Memory for new build

Hello all,

I am in the process of planning a new build. I was thinking of putting in 2x8(16) memory in the system so that I don't have to think about upgrading ram in a while, but I am starting to second guess that thought. The lowest case latency on that kind of set up that I am find is around 10. The 1866 is incredibly expensive, and unless my thinking is incorrect not worth getting over some 1600 memory.

How important is 7cl vs 10cl, and will I be losing out on serious speed going with the larger amount of RAM?

dont bother with 1866MHz ram, go with 1333 or 1600, that will save you alot of money... in my opinion you should probaly go with 4x4 of ram to avoid incompatibility

also, the fx 8150 isnt the worst chip, but the previous generation of phenomII chips outpreform it core for core, so you may want to pick up a phII1100T 6 core before there gone

The reason I want to go with 2 sticks as opposed to 4, is that with two I can easier upgrade to 32 gb at some unknown point in the future if I ever decide to do so. There in lay the crux of my conundrum however. Do I go with the easier upgrade option, or angle for lower case latency and forgo future upgrades? How much a gain will I realize with CL 7 over CL 9 or 10?

U will see the real difference in the benchmarks. Its milliseconds, we are talking about.

RAM speed is a function of both Frequency (high) and CAS Timings (low). However, as the Desity increases it's tough to find high Frequency + low CAS; this is a lithography and density issue 'now' plus a strain on the CPU's IMC. Ideally, the FX-8150 default frequency is DDR3-1866 and your MOBO offers 4XDIMM slots. If you need 16GB of RAM then the most cost efficient way is a DDR3-1866 4x4GB Set.

Q - Why 2x8GB vs 4x4GB?
Q - What's the budget for the RAM?

Q - Out of curiosity what need do you have for so much RAM? I read what you stated but it very vague. Typically its if you Render, large data (databases, image files), RAM Drive, etc. Otherwise 8GB (2x4GB) is fine for 99% of the folks now and for sometime...

The budget is whatever it needs to be. I know that's not the answer you were looking for, but if the best answer is to get 1833 Ram then that's what I will get. The 2x option is just to make it easier to upgrade to more memory down the road.

As for why I need so much. I don't know that I *need* that much, I am just looking for a solution that won't have me upgrading in 2 or so years. I do tend to run a Vbox a lot, and it would be nice to be able to run two vm's at the same time and still run other applications without a huge degradation in performance. That way I can create a sand box to hold a web/database server and have my development vm up on the same machine, while still using the main box to play video games and/or play youtube videos. I tend to hit the limits of my current machine quite a bit. Granted it only has 4GB of ram, but like I mention above I don't really want to upgrade again for a while.

Running AMD-V or VT-d/x then I've got my doubts about 8GB/stick and DDR3-1866 especially piecemealing two 2x8GB sets. Further, what's available now might not be later then you might be faced with a worst mix-match later.

well i was wrong with incompatibility...

the guy above, that is quite high latency... unfortunatly the corsair website hates me... and boots me out whenever i try to refine my search...
i cant find any other company's that put out 8gb dimms 🙁
