Retain XP Pro opening screen

Hello!
This may seem very unimportant...but I love that my bootup screen says *XP
Professional.* I converted to SP2, but because of some concern about duplicated
applications (firewall, antivirus, popups) because I see them as ways to slow
down operations, I went back to SP1. But recently, some very nice MS-MVPs have
suggested I was spitting upwind by not staying with SP2. On the whole I would
agree, but SP2's opening screen only says *XP* not *XP Professional.* Sure it
may be an ego trip, but is there any way to convert to SP2 and retain the SP1
opening screen?

Try this ... http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/xpbootlogo/ it might work,
but use at your own peril.

Thanks for the info...still wonder WHY? After all you pay more for Pro than
Home. As I said...probably an ego thing!

SP2 makes a cosmetic change to the boot screen as you noticed.
This is normal. The change reduces the testing footprint for the
various editions of Windows XP.
With a common boot screen, the test matrix does not require unique
testing of screens for all of the possible Windows XP editions.

The splash screen that appears at startup does not display the
complete Windows XP version information

Because each SKU with the different text needed a different file
(ntoskrnl.exe or another similar file).

When there is a need to update the files, they'd have to update it x number
of times for each SKU. The more things you have to fix, the more chance of
error.

Quite understandable! But is there anyway to incorporate the screen file
independently...i.e. overwriting the appropriate SP2 file?

No anyway that's supported.

Why bother, it's not like you see that screen for more than 10 seconds.

Thank you...
This may seem a little too simple, but could not one simply save the
ntoskrnl.exe file from SP1, install SP2, and then overwrite ntoskrnl.exe?
Or would that screw something else up?

Still dont understand the big deal about this. Why worry about a
splash screen that most of the time you never even look at anyway? I
know when I turn my system on I punch the power button and then go do
some other things and when I get back to the system to use it its
sitting at the desktop. I don't waste my time watching it load and
display its splash screen.

If you need to prove to someone that you actually put out the extra $
for pro then simply right click My Computer and select Proerties and
show them. Why worry about that useless splash screen eye candy.

You are right without a doubt! I just thought if there was a simple way to
retain the screen, I would do it. But in the course of this thread, I learned
much about SP2, and WHY Microsoft chose to universalize the opening screen. That
in itself was worth the price of admission!
