If you are going to go with intel this is your best bet

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-pc-overclocking-pc-building,3273.html

But it you want to go with amd then chose either a phenom ii 975 black edition (or phenom ii 965 black edition) or choose a A8 3870k unlocked

With the phenomii you could get a radeon hd 6870-6950 or a gtx 550ti-560ti which are all pretty good gpus that can run most games out there on high with 1280x800 resolution

With the A8 it has a good onboard gpu that can crossfire with other amd radeon hd 6000's but you need a good mobo to utilize this

Ive chosen all overclockers because thats the main thing. If you dont overclock you probabley wont catch up to the cpu standards of today.

Yah, I said cheap but not exactly as cheap as a $500 rig, Do you have any suggestions? I will go for a $1000-600 rig

Something like this would max most of the games today :)
