Well it is time to build another toy. I have a 500G 7200.11 HDD and 4G Of OCZ fatality ram, along with Vista Ultimate 64.

Heres the rest in a newegg wishlist. https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=10660846

The power supply isn't the greatest but I have used it in lots of non gamer builds and it is noiseless. If anyone knows a better quality PSU that is silent, I would appreciate some feedback.

This PC will run kid apps, and communication/ AAC software and store my DvD collection, as well as record TV. Also it be used for surfing, and checking e-mail.

I think I will swap the mobo to this one as well for the raid and s/pdif out. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131336

It should work. Hmm.

It would be nice to record HD but I dont see any way to make it happen with Direct tv, I will be stuck recording analog, I'm afraid. budget is aroung $1000-$1500, I have a i7 rig for my getter done machine.

Hey RR,

I suggest you change the G45 board to one of the new GeForce 9300/9400 boards. Here's a good article to support that:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=6&id=2732

Also, consider the new HVR-2250 over the HVR-1800 for the TV tuner. It has a built in splitter so you can watch and record two digital or two analog stations at the same time (the 1800 requires two coax connections, and you can only do 1 digital and 1 analog at once).

Keep us posted on your project. Do you still have that massive DVD collection? You might need to encode to x.264 or get a bigger hard drive.

Ya I got a way more masssive DvD collection now. And a massive divx/xvid collection. But I prefer the interface of the DvD collection management.

I kinda like the G45s, good luck with them already. And I will probably add a deticated GPU later.

Built my mom one on the same mobo with a e1200 and it does blu/ray just fine.

I think I will get like 6TB of harddrives on my i7 rig and use it on windows home server.

I will look at the other tuner. Tuners for direct tv are so confusing and limited, I may just switch back to charter cable.

one question: why the Q6600? is there any real benefit to it over a cheap dual core? do you need it for blu ray encoding/decoding or something?
