Hello,
I have recently completed a new build and I am having some issues with my M.2 slots.

Specs:
ROG Strix z590-E
i5-11600k
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400
EVGA RTX 3070 Ti
Samsung 980 Pro NVMe OS drive
Samsung 870 EVO NMVe Storage drive
Windows 10 Home 64 bit

The MoBo specs for Storage are as follows:
Supports 4 x M.2 slots and 6 x SATA 6Gb/s ports

Intel®11th &10th Gen Processors*
M.2_1 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110
- Only Intel® 11th Core™ processors support PCIe 4.0 x4 mode, this slot will be disabled for other CPUs

M.2_2 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110
  • Intel® 11th processors support PCIe 4.0 x4 mode
  • Intel® 10th processors support PCIe 3.0 x4 mode
Intel® Z590 Chipset
M.2_3 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (supports PCIe 3.0 x4 mode)
M.2_4 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 3.0 x4 & SATA modes)*
6 x SATA 6Gb/s ports

Raid function in Intel® Rapid Storage Technology is available with either 1. Intel® SSDs installed in both CPU-attached and PCH-attached slots, or 2. any other 3rd party SSDs installed in PCH-attached slots.
To enable Intel® Optane™ Memory (Hybrid Storage device), it must be installed in PCH-attached slots with Intel® Rapid Storage Technology.
*When M.2_4 is operating in SATA device, SATA6G_2 will be disabled.

I installed my Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD in the M.2_1 slot, which is working fine. It has Win 10 on it.
However, my older Samsung 870 EVO NMVe SSD that I installed in the M.2_2 slot is not being recognized. It works fine in the other 2 slots: M.2_3 and M.2_4, just not in the M.2_2!

I tried the 980 Pro in the M.2_2 to rule out an SSD problem and the 980 Pro did not work in the M.2_2 slot either. The 870 EVO worked fine in the M.2_1 slot, this rules out SSD issues.
All the Intel drivers are installed and BIOS updated to the latest version prior to installing anything else.

Any idea as to why the M.2_2 slot is not working?

Thank you.

I think your out of PCI- E lanes on the CPU.
The 11600k has 20 lanes both the M.2 1&2 slots run off the cpu.
16 for the video card just leaves 4.

Edit found this saying you have to make the 2nd one active, but you still only have 20 CPU lanes

Thank you for the quick reply!
A little bit disappointed that I can not take advantage of the PCIe 4.0 for both drives and the GPU, but well...
I guess I'll keep the storage SSD in the M.2_3 slot.

What BIOS version are you currently on for your motherboard?

Currently using BIOS 1402. That's the latest.

You won't notice any practical difference in loading times with current gen games anyways. With nextgen games using directstorage, I would install them on your main M2_1 drive and put current gen games on the m2_3 drive.
