Round IDE Cables?

I had a nightmare just now moving my IDE devices about to get my CDRW drive workign at full whack.

I've been looking around and there seem to be round IDE ATA100 cables about. Made by someone called eurotech.

Anyone know somewhere to get these from in the UK? I reckon these'd make my PC alot tidier/cooler.

If you haven't seen them - http://www.euro-tech.co.uk/brandnew.php?brand=Eurotech

Umm, apologies if I've misunderstood something, but...

There is a button on the page you posted a link to, 'where to buy' detailing UK retailers, that might be a good place to start

Rounded cables work great, and they look nice, too. Just make sure the ones you get have no obvious flaws.

Yeah, i looked through those links (the ones that deliver to mainland UK or are close to me anyway). Of the five i checked (including dabs and watford) they don't actually sell them as far as i can see. So them exhausted, i'm going to try and ring eurotech now, i'll let you know the result.

Yeah, round cables seem cool, i was looking at 36" ones. Does performance degrade badly with length then?

Right, rang eurotech and they supplied me direct.

Bought two round 90cm ATA 100 IDE cables (they support ATA133 as well) and one round 45cm FDD cable for £27.96 including VAT and delivery to Surrey.

If you want some, ring them on 0870 458 0011 or email on sales@euro-tech.co.uk

Reckon they're just the thing!

Yes, 36" is too long, you might experience noticable slow downs or in the worst case, data corruption.

Hmm.. 90/2.5 = ~36 in, right? You may want to change that..

Me "I bought a TNT2 M64, the BIOS says its a Vanta"
IOMagic "Theyre the same card"
Me "Um, no"

Eurotech assure me that:
1) they sell loads
2) that they've never had one back due to problems

He seems to be sure they'll be fine, i hope they are, i'll tell you and you can mock me if they arn't.

Anyway, i found another place that sells them for those in the UK, wish i'd looked there first, they sell a nice bundle pack of cables. Here's the link

They probably will (for the most part) but it'll significantly slow down your hard drive.

Cool, tell you what. I'll run some HDD benchmarking before and after I put them in and i'll publish the results here. At least if i've screwed up, i can stop anyone else doing the same.

Anyone know a good benchmarking prog? Either just for HDDs, or i wouldn't mind a decent one that can do everything, any thoughts?

Well, got me cables.

I've benchmarked before and after installation with Sisoft Sandra's disk util.

C:
index before - 11168
index after - 11519

I'm not sure the increase isn't a bit erroneous, but it didn't look like they've slowed down atall from that so I tried EzeCD's transfer rate tests:

Before

c:
small files 5499 KB/s
large files 14596

I: (winME root)
small files 8675
large files 27739

After

C:
small files 5744
large files 14486

I:
small files 8489
large files 24504

So there is a performance hit (i'm more convinced by the straight data transfer test).

Wow! They've got loads of them... nice!

So, what's the opinion? Should I dump me roundies for me flatties? I'm not sure if i'm gonna notice a small performance hit like that when i'm only running an Athlon 500 anyway.
