Router Port Issues

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here would know of a reason why just 1 port on my router suddenly drops connection. All other ports stay active but the port I'm connected to just suddenly drops and if I go unplug from the port and straight back in again its fine. It just keeps randomly doing this. I am connected to the port via cat5 cable which go through the floor boards and down into my room. So it just plugs straight in with each end of the cable nothing between. It also doesn't seem to matter which port I am connected to the issue continues.

Thanks for any replies.

Did you purchase the cable with the ends already on or did you wire the ends yourself? If you wired the ends incorrectly, it can cause problems. Some routers will shut down a port if it detects too many collisions or errors on the line. If you purchesed it with ends already on, there may be a wire break somewhere. A line tester would detect the break. If you have extra cable, you can try swapping it out.

Heya, Thanks for the reply. The ends were on but we couldn't get the wire through the existing floor space with one of the ends on so we had to cut the end off then pull it through and reconnect it back together again. I guess I will need to get one of those telephone extension things for the wall that you wire the cable into and then use a ethernet and microfilter from there. Sorry for the lack of technical terms Im quite a div when it comes to anything technical. By any chance would anyone know which type of wall telephone extension it would use?

Found the telephone extension I needed and have ordered it but just had a look at my cable and it has the 8 wires as normal but instead on Blue, orange, green and brown, then white with each of these colours. It has a Dark Blue, orange, brown and green and a light blue, brown orange and green. Would that wiring it to a telephone extension for cat5 cable still work the same if I assume the light colours and the white and said colour equivalent are one and the same thing?

I'm not sure I understand. It's not a phone jack, but an ethernet jack. In technical terms, it's an RJ-45 jack.

There should be 4 pairs of wires:
orange
orange-white
blue
blue-white
green
green-white
brown
brown-white

To wire the end properly this should be the order of the wires starting at pin 1 on the end connector:
orange-white
orange
green-white
blue
blue-white
green
brown-white
brown

Mine for some reason goes

Orange
Light Orange
Blue
Light Blue
Green
Light Green
Brown
Light Brown

So I assume the light version is I.e Light brown = Brown - White
