Question RTX 4080 Super black screen

Hi everyone,

I’m a bit desperate right now. Two days ago, I built my first "high-end" PC, and since I’m still a beginner, please let me know if I’m missing any important information.

Now to the problem: After assembling the PC, everything looked fine, and it booted up properly. I used the Nvidia app to install the latest drivers and also installed the drivers for the motherboard and processor.
However, now I’m facing an issue: when I open a new program in fullscreen mode, I sometimes (with some programs almost always) get a black screen. This can last up to about 2 minutes. After that, everything works as normal.

Twice, the screen stayed black for so long that I had to manually turn the PC off and on again using the power button. It’s truly a black screen—the monitor doesn’t display "no signal" or anything like that. Because of this, I initially suspected it might be a driver issue. Unfortunately, reinstalling the drivers didn’t help. I also did a complete fresh installation of Windows, but the problem persisted.

To narrow down the issue, I connected the cable to the DP port on the motherboard (my processor has an integrated GPU), and everything worked fine. So, the problem seems to lie with the graphics card or its drivers.

As far as I can tell (with my limited knowledge), it doesn’t seem to be an issue of overheating or insufficient power. I logged the GPU sensors during the black screen, and nothing seemed to change. Interestingly, the problem also occurs with low-graphics applications like opening the Apple Music app (yes, it exists on Windows). However, I can play graphically intensive games using the GPU without any black screen. The issue mainly occurs when I open or close something or while installing the GPU drivers.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Please feel free to ask for more information if needed—I'm still a beginner in this field.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Hardware:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D
  • RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 schwarz DIMM Kit 32GB
  • Mainboard: MSI B650 Gaming plus Wifi
  • PSU: Seasonic Focus GX 850W ATX 3.0
  • Tower: Fractal Design North Charcoal Black TG Dark, Glasfenster
  • GPU: Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Trinity Black Edition, 16GB GDDR6X, HDMI, 3x DP
  • HDD / SSD: Lexar NM790 2TB, M.2 2280 / M-Key / PCIe 4.0 x4

What I already did: Reinstallation of graphics drivers, BIOS update of the motherboard, reinstallation of Windows, used a different connector on the graphics card.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

I used the Nvidia app to install the latest drivers and also installed the drivers for the motherboard and processor.
You're advised to manually install all drivers with the latest version in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

What I already did: Reinstallation of graphics drivers, BIOS update of the motherboard, reinstallation of Windows, used a different connector on the graphics card.
Did you use DDU? If not, use DDU to remove all GPU drivers(Intel, AMD and Nvidia) in Safe Mode, then manually install the latest driver sourced from Nvidia's support site in an elevated command(as stated above).

What BIOS version are you on? Where did you source the installer for the OS? Speaking of OS, what OS are you working with?

I also did a complete fresh installation of Windows, but the problem persisted.
Did you install the OS in offline mode(meaning not connected to the internet)?

Thank you, I will try the DDU...Just a small update so far: I tried an HDMI cable and suddenly everything is working...I plug the DP back and I get the same problem again. I tried that back and forth 4 times: It is somehow only related to the DP port or cable. Unfortunately I dont have another DP to try and the one I had was new. Anyway, I ordered a new one - but can it be the cable? Why is there a problem with the cable when I start a program?
