Hi all, I am looking at upgrading my GPU to the RTX 5080 Xtreme , I think its looks great and I have to have a water block so it will fit it in my custom case. I was thinking of this graphics card and not the 5090 version as it is about half the price. My question is that is the 5090 really worth that much more?

The 5090 is significantly more performant than the 5080 (and also much more expensive), but there are many variables to take into account. For example, if you have an old CPU and don't plan to upgrade, then you won't see any difference between the 5080 and the 5090. Also, what resolution are playing at? If you play in 4k the 5090 would give you a much higher frame rate. And what games are you playing? I remember a few years ago my brother spent a fortune on a high-end gaming computer and he was only playing WoW. I was like... why?

My current system

Gigabyte Z790 Auros Elite AX
I5 13600 Kf
2 x 16 gb DDR5 6000mhz CL36 Corsair
SN850 500gb For OS
SN850 2tb FOr games
Asus Rog Strix RTX 2080 TI

All custom watercooled.

The follow up question is relative, what will you be taxing the system/discrete GPU with?
Youtuber Daniel Owen raised that same question. In fact he goes on to show that Nvidia has increased the gap of the xx80 vs the xx90 the last two generations and closed the gap on the lower to mid tier cards. Whereas previously the big gap increased on the lower to mid GPU's.

I would love to have a 5090 (I have the money) and I have had the chance to buy a Zotac on their website as well as on Newegg, although I have to purchase a combo or open box. I just can't seem to convince myself that I need to pay a few thousand dollars for my hobby. So I went with the 5080. It serves my needs for the time being.

Hopefully AMD reenters the flagship GPU arena next gen. A successor to the premium 7900XTX would be nice with 32GB.

5080 is a gimped GPU.

If it had 24 GB, I would say go for it.

But with AAA games becoming more demanding with each passing day, i think that 5090’s 32 GBs of VRAM will serve you much better.

Power supply? 5090 uses a lot of power so it may not be a simple drop in. 5090 plus waterblock plus PSU is going to set you back a lot.

2080 Ti is a 250W part. RTX 5080 is 360W, RTX 5090 is 575W.
