News RTX 5090 FE unboxing reveals eco-friendly packaging — an inkless box made of "paper fibers

Wow! Not even a plastic bag??? Be glad that package didn't get left out in the rain! And what about ESD?

Something tells me this is special "Reviewer Edition" packaging, not what the rest of us would get, if we ordered a Founders Edition.

I have to say it does feel a little like green-washing, to use such eco packaging in a product with far higher environmental impact in its production and usage than your typical GPU packaging would've added. Maybe they're hoping it distracts the conversation from the power consumption figures. Not that I'm opposed to reducing packaging waste, mind you.

What I know with a high likelihood of truth is that the average hair dryer user uses less power than almost any 5090 user.
Which is an apples to oranges comparison. A large percentage of 5090 users will leave their system running 24-7 because it uses a pretty meaningless amount of electricity while idling. In that scenario the 575W TGP you want to focus on is irrelevant as a 4090 with a 450W TGP idles at about 20W which is only about 10W more than x60 cards. 20W 24-7 is roughly the same amount of electricity that a hair dryer would use in 15 minutes every day. You keep moving the goal posts around to try and make an argument that isn't valid.

Is there an exact embargo day on reviews for the 5080 and 5090? Seen a few different answers and wondering if anyone knows for sure. Thought I saw 29th for the 5080 and 24th for the 5090 but would love confirmation.

Looking forward. Would it be possible to include benchmarks undervolted to 450W and 300W for example. Losing 3% of fps is not a big deal if it decreases a decent amount of power and heat.

The 35-88 watts of idle power my 3080 uses with 2 or 3 displays is certainly non-trivial in a 24/7 setting. I never moved any goalpost and what is ridiculous is the original comparison made. My claim in the original post is completely true. Please show me all these people who buy X090s and use them at idle power 24/7. You implied my original claim was not what an everyday home user would do, yet an everyday X090 user also does not idle the card 24/7. The average user probably does 2-6 hours of above idle work/game a day and then idles for the same. In any case, certainly more power use than a hair dryer, my original claim.

Surely they didn't have to show a corrugated side of the carboard as if we don't believe them. That bit is pretty much a cheap "I am eco friendly warrior" statement in my eyes. Which is obvious anyway.

I'm all for utilitarian packaging, but...
I'd have expected a metal chest/case or Pelican-style case.
-at least those are indefinitely reusable.

Seems kinda silly.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to say. The embargoes are always a bit nebulous with situations like this. What I can say is that both go on sale on January 30, and we'll have reviews up by then. Well, that's assuming I don't die in the process...

Thanks Jared that is crazy that they are that weird about it but thanks. At this point I kind of feel like these embargos don't make any sense. They just stop people from being informed.

Please don't die before you release the 5090 review 😆, I need to know if its good enough for my Gigabyte 240hz 4k OLED... Are you planning on releasing peak power usage for the system?

I need to know if I actually need to replace the Seasonic 850 Titanium PSU in my system. If I do the Hydro Ti PRO(ATX3.1) 1000W is going to have to be ordered. Since its only 150mm long I can stuff my next PC into a Jonsbo Jonsplus Z20. I am thinking something like this is in order in the future, because why not.

They have multiple embargos spread out so the news outlets have to release information articles for multiple days up to release so its on people's minds longer. This is a new aged marketing trick and it's very effective.

The review embargoes are there to give reviewers time to do quality reviews and hopefully not die in the attempt. Otherwise, just think of what the news would be like, with the people who receive their review package first getting an unfair advantage and scrambling to post literally anything, in pursuit of clicks. Conversely, if someone comes out with a comprehensive review, a few days later, it'll get far fewer clicks than it deserves.

Yes, there are leaks that come out before embargoes lift, but I think the traffic to the main review articles isn't much reduced by them.

It's supposed to be a surprise, maybe? I don't know. Like Helper said, it's just marketing, and it's annoying.

The good news is I've written about all the architectural stuff, the FE cards, etc. for last week's embargo. The bad news is that just leaves benchmarks for the review. Or rehashing 7000 words of content that I already wrote.

So, I'm going to talk about the 4090 and you can extrapolate. I'll have full power testing for the 5090, but even getting a 4090 to hit its rated 450W TGP can be difficult. Lots of games run well under 450W. Here, I'll just post the table for the 4090 testing...

PowTempTable-RTX-4090.png

So there are a bunch of games that don't hit 450W or even close to it, even at 4K ultra. I don't have the 5090 numbers yet, but just looking at 4090 you can pretty much guess that any games where the 4090 falls well short of 450W, the 5090 will likewise fall well short of 575W.

That said, I'm sure there will be things that do hit the 575W TGP limit, and even if you have a "modest" 125W CPU, that's already 700W. A high quality 850W PSU like the Seasonic 850 Titanium should still be okay, but PSUs do degrade over time and if you're spending two grand on a 5090, plunking down a few hundred on a new ~1200W upgrade probably isn't a bad idea.

Thanks for the information, its very much appreciated!

I have run my 3080 with a 500W BIOS for OCing on with an AC unit when it first dropped. It had multiple 480-500w draw moments in games so I am sure that this could work until I build a system in the future. I am sure if I limit the power to 80% I wont even lose 5% performance, just like prior Nvidia cards. So a 460 watt limited 5090 is probably what I will do if I can ever snag one. I need/want a FE of the card for that build I linked.

Sorry but they are just marketing tricks. I don't believe for a second this is to help sites do the right thing or not do a rushed review. It's not like they don't have these cards available long before launch. It's all just a manipulation if you ask me. Not about these corps taking care of their reviewers at all.

Maybe @JarredWaltonGPU can tell us. Do you usually have plenty of time with GPUs at launch to do the testing and write your reviews, or is it usually/always a crunch?

I mean he did say he thought it didn't seem to make any sense.
"It's supposed to be a surprise, maybe? I don't know. Like Helper said, it's just marketing, and it's annoying."

They already have the card, and pretty sure, although not confirmed it drops on the 24th, and the 5080 drops on the 29th/30th. Either way it is just conjecture as I doubt they tell everyone why and every company has their own reasons.

If you ask me it is so they can push the higher end card a bit harder by not letting people know what their options are at long. Seems pointless in a market where everything sells out anyway.

I think you're taking that out of context, as I doubt that was meant to apply to the fundamental concept of review embargoes, but let's see what he says.

Of course they phase launches of different product tiers in certain ways, and for certain reasons. Whether or not they do that is beside the point I was trying to make.
