Hello,
Is there a rule of how to buy memory? I am getting a asus 4 x 240 pin motherboard. I would like to have a total of 8 gig - Can I buy 4 2s or do I have to buy 2 4s. The 4 2s seem cheaper so if that works I would like to do that.

I am building my first computer and am running into a few problems which must seem basic. I cannot find this awnser anywhere else.

Thanks for any advice!!

In your case,
I'd only advise making sure the ram is supported by both your Mobo and processor,
Some intel boards are triple channel for memory so you would want to buy three sticks for optimum speeds, but most boards out there are dual channel so as long as you do things in a multiple of two, you should be fine.

Thank you all for your input - I have been reading on here for a few weeks here and it seems like there are a lot of very knowledgable people who are willing to help. Some forums I have looked on it seems like people dont want to help beginners. Thank you very much.

When I use the memory selector on newegg.com it only comes up with crucial brand memory, which appears to be considerably more expensive. Will all memory work as loge as there is room, I buy in multiples of two, and it has 240 pins to fit into the mobo? Not trying to go cheap but the cost seem to be adding up on me and am looking for a few ways to cut back so I can get started.

Thanks!

As long as they match your requirements Re: DDR2 or DDR3, and speed 1333/1600, whichever your chip and mobo support, youll be fine, named brands are obviously more reliable as a rule, but as you say, also cost more.
and multiples of 2 keeps you your dual channel boost :)
