I don't get all the AMD bashing either. Besides the fan issue on my old 4870 card Ive had no problems with drivers anything else. Currently I'm using a GTX 570 but I buy whatever whenever.

You've got to love two worthy opponents going at it 🙂
Unlike our "high speed" (laugh) internet providers, NVidia and AMD actually improve their offerings.
That's how competition should work !

Every review of the latest AMD series GPUs show that they have almost perfect scaling! That means that in many cases the addition of the 2nd GPU means a leap in performance of to about 100% - given that the game is not CPU limited. So I dont understand what u guys mean when talking about AMD screwing anybody with crossfire. They have the last 2 generation of graphics cards been better than nVidia at this.

I don't know why you got downrated for this, but on the vast majority of dual-GPU benchmarks, the scaling on Crossfire on the 6xxx series was easily superior to that of the 5xxx series and even better than SLi. Despite the 6850 and 6870 being weaker than the 5850 and 5870 (not that they were direct replacements anyway, name or otherwise), they actually worked out about the same in speed in Crossfire across the board as well as using notably less power. In general, you're looking at around 80-90% extra performance with a second card in most popular games. Sure, AMD have a larger issue with micro-stuttering than nVidia on the whole, so if people are going to have a pop at AMD about something graphics-related, it should be that; nVidia certainly aren't perfect, even if they generally have better support.

[citation][nom]Memnarchon[/nom]With this superb performance of the single gpus (7970 and promised 680) we wouldn't need dual gpus for single monitors unless, we see new metro 2033 or stalker or something similar...[/citation]

Its called "Metro: Last Light" and its coming in the 2nd half of 2012. Hopefully just in time for ripe drivers from AMD and full eye-finity support ^^

I feel like the Driver argument Nvidia fan boys put up should just stop. AMD's driver support has been solid in the past driver releases. In fact, if someone installed the drivers correctly and correctly cleaned prior drivers they should have no issues with it. I had my 5850 since it released about 2 years ago and never had driver issues like so many people reported. And if the fan boys are so keen on saying AMD screws them over on Crossfire support, why did the scaling of the AMD cards prove better than the Nvidia cards?

Jeez, why dont the AMD come out a 7970 XT that clocked @ core 1200MHz, 6500 Memory as default. That would probably enough to at par or beating GK104. Same 1 chip, do away the multi-card driver probs, heat prob of dual gpu cards. I personally dont see a value of dual GPU cards when motherboard with dual PCIE 116 is soo common these days, and people who want to run Quad GPU, probably already bought a mobo with 4x PCIE x16.

unless Nvidia's GK104 is really 50-70% faster than GTX580(which I dont believe so) a decent "official" launch 7970 XT would be able to hold up well against GK104. Dual GPU cards are useless these days.

$850. FAIL.

AMD/ATI has been good in the past in beating Nvidia in price/performance. With equal price performance to Nvidia THERE IS NO REASON TO BUY AMD. I've owned primarily ATI/AMD cards in all of my systems for a few years now. But if I'm going to drop BIG money, I want mature drivers and support. AMD doesn't have this. It's a fact. 7970 STILL doesn't have good drivers and it's been out for months.

AMD....turning fans into enemies daily

It's coming out for sure there is too much headroom on those cards to not overclock and repackage as a 7980 or 7975 or something.

Yeah, not really sure what's up with all of the hate for the AMD drivers. I had a HD 4850 in my rig for almost 3 years and believe I had severe driver issues with a single upgrade. Simply uninstalled, waited a month for AMD to release the next version, and presto, problem solved.

On the other hand, I was one of the people who had the internet browser/flash TDR glitch with my GTX 560. The 295 batch of drivers fixed things for me, but the turnaround time on fixing that problem was roughly 6 months. In Nvidia's defense, I do like their control panel's ability to customize game profiles more than I liked the CCC (unless AMD's changed that recently).

Can't speak about Crossfire, either.

If this thing is going to be priced at 550$ like the new Nvidia Kepler card, then that would KILL Nvidia this time around. Since they decided to screw their customers over by not releasing a TRUE 680 and instead releasing a 660ti and labeling it as a 680 to jack up the prices, AMD fires back with this thing which will most likely sell better if its priced around 550$.

Brilliant AMD, keep this up!

Im no AMD fanboy btw, I always buy Nvidia, but their latest cash grab shenanigans pissed me off enough to make me want to see them fail this time around.

Its probably going to be around $1000 to start (the last dual GPU HD6990 was almost $900 at launch). The $550 is the hD7970.

Also, there is no labling the 660ti as a 680. From the leaked and rumored specs, the GTX680 will have 1536 CUDA cores while the GTX660ti will only have 512 from what I have seen.

As for cash grab, they all do it. Look at AMD. The HD7970 is the best GPU so they drop a $550 price tag on it. The last time I saw a Radeon GPU at $500 was when the X1950XT came out, many many years ago.

Don't forget 3D gaming. Playing games on my ASUS 3D vision 2 monitor really puts a hurting on even my 480 GTXs in SLI. But ya, single 580 GTX (and upcoming 680) would be more then enough for 1080 single monitor gaming (then again they are $400-$500 cards, so that's expected imo).

My wife plays everything at 1080p with a little AA on with a single 580 GTX very smooth.

But with 15-30% performance over the 7870s at $550, the estimated $499 680 is going to be a great deal for those who are in real need of an upgrade.

[citation][nom]rmpumper[/nom]Good move by AMD. nVidia will beat 7970 with 680 and then AMD will answer by crushing the 680 with 7990.[/citation]

And then Nvidia will crush AMD with 690 duel gpu kepler 😛, duh!

And besides, Nvidia has better 3D gaming support, better drivers, CUDA, and most of the AAA titles (the good ones) run better on Nvidia. Why would anyone buy AMD? Haha.

NVIDIA 3D Vision Surround

GeForce GTX 680 has a support for operations on four monitors simultaneously. Since card has four outputs for displaying devices (HDMI, DisplayPort and two DVI-DL) it is possible to connect devices to all of them, and operate on multiple displays at once. This setting has a support of 3D Vision Surround technology. Every gamer that has heard of 3D Vision from NVIDIA will understand how interesting this option can be. Connecting three of four displays and play on them with stereoscopic 3D support may be quite a fun.

Get 3 7950s instead

Reasons
1. It will out perform the dual cards
2. It still has 3GB of memory per a GPU so it will be able to do everything you want most resolutions & it's better future proofed then an NVIDIA option which will be limited to 2GB per a core this gen apparently.
3. It will likely outperform everything from NVIDIA as well AMD has the advantage in multi GPU scaling
4. If your not gaming the other 2 cards will power down still so your not stuck with massive power bills when doing general computing.

This option would cost a pretty penny but it would also likely last for a few generations more.

What a waste of $! $1,500 in GPUs that will be worth $600 at most in 2-3 years. The best way to future proof is to save your $ and buy something much faster in the future.

Look at GTX480. Came out at $499 and not even 2 years later we've seen it on sale for $175-210 on Newegg. Those Tri-Fire HD7950s are a giant waste. At least if you get this HD7990 it could be sold later to bitcoin miners. HD7950? No one is going to want it once HD7980 is out and HD7970 drops in price.

Frankly I'm opposed to SLI/Crossfire in any way. Any micro stuttering at all is not acceptable. I prefer my games naturally aspirated

well.. not only drivers, the good of nvidia is always they made everything works.. nothing features are broken.

like gtx 480?
