wow...some of you acted like MS forced you to update. I don't update to every version of Window...usually I skip a version or two before I update the OS...same for all software & games.

[citation][nom]Netherscourge[/nom]I could care less about Win 8 or Win 9.Win 7 is on may machine and it's staying there until the PC industry dies.[/citation]
I still have xp on my main work computer

[citation][nom]soo-nah-mee[/nom]Got xpSkipped VistaGot W7Skip W8Get W9 (?)[/citation]
for me it went:

DOS w/automenu
3.11
98SE
XP
vista
XP

I know, I know, I went backwards on the last one. When 98SE was being phased out I swore I'd go to linux rather than another windows product. I'm still threatening to go linux.

I like how Windows 8 starts faster, has lower resource requirements, and has the new task manager and file copy dialog, but dislike the new explorer, with more buttons, and THE STUPID METRO UI that's impractical to use on a regular machine, like what most people have!

It takes more then two years to validate a new OS for business use in some cases. Hence why SOOO many companies STILL use XP... This 'making' a new version instead of a service pack (per-say) is a horrible idea and going to destroy their bottom line in that sense. Plus the drastic changes they are doing; NOBODY wants... MetroUI should be, and ONLY be, an OPTIONAL add-on for tablets or touch-screen devices. Maybe that's their plan but I haven't seen a suitable 'start bar' yet from any of the existing test packages.

[citation][nom]gamerk316[/nom]*Points out that two out of three consoles don't have a DX SDk, and even on the 360, coding directly to the hardware is more common then the DX SDK due to speed reasons*[/citation]
Ahh, but the horrible 'console->pc' porting packages they use is all DX9 based... That's one of the biggest problems with gaming today... Well, that and they haven't made a 'difficult' game in years... I had high hopes for Dragon Age (original) but on the hardest settings it was ridiculously easy... Not to mention I actually fell asleep playing that game... And with all the built-in auto-aimers now-a-days on FPS games, they are a joke... Can't even turn it off in RAGE... But this is all another topic... Crossing my fingers for Skyrim... But not holding my breath... Had to wait for difficulty upgraded mods to make it enjoyable with Oblivion... We'll see...

does this mean bulldozer will be a disappointment till august 2012? 😀
by that time ivy bridge will come out, nvidia 6xx cards will also be out. more ultrabooks will be available, apple will still be overpriced.
so much for amd's "oh it's not our fault, windows 7 is just not optimized for bulldozer, window 8.0 is blah blah". what will the current bulldozer owners do?
amd better show significant improvements with bulldozer in windows 8.0.

According to AMD, Windows 8 adds some new schedulers, making their bulldozer look better..
So I suppose only people with ultra-threaded computers will benefit..

Still going to install it however when it's RTM ;P

Will it work? Almost all users have never used anything then Windows and think its natural with spyware, viruses and all patcher/bugs/blue screens. People who have used real computers like Sun Solaris/HPUX knows about uptimes of years.

The fact is that MSFT don't want to make a working version of Windows. That would lead to people not upgrading. MSFT lives on making crap products so that people are forced to upgrade. The funniest thing is that people belive that its an "open" platform. Gamers are forced to use Windows. Why? Because MSFT choose not to follow open standards and instead uses DirectX. The Evil Apple that is closed always follows open standards, but they don't license their OS since its impossible to make it work on millions different hardware configurations. MSFT doesn't care if it doesn't work. You will upgrade if it doesn't work.
2011 was the year that closed standards like Adobe Flash and MSFT Silverlight was killed thanks to Steve Jobs and they both adopted open HTML5. Lets hope that MSFT continues with this and use industry standards instead of locking in its users.

BTW. I am not advocating that OSX is the greatest thing since sliced bread. OSX 10.7 is the worst OSX so far. It's Apples Vista. Windows 7 in other hand is the best Windows so far. Windows 8 with Metro does not look promising. The tile system is retarded. "but you can use classic" No I cant. I cant use MSFT store if I run Classic. I cant use ARM windows with classic. MSFT wants to play Apple and look you in. The difference is that Apples approach at least give the benefit of optimized hardware/software something that MSFT never can do with millions of different hardware configurations.

You know that MSFT have said the same about every single OS release.
Since they have lied all the times so far, why belive them now?

The Metro UI is the fist GUI that MSFT haven't copied from Apple. I respect MSFT for that. But Metro is insane/crap. People who owns a X360 can get a taste of this insane system.

Google needs to release a desktop Android as soon as possible since both MSFT and Apple are going the wrong way with OS. MSFT with Metro and Apple who is making its OS like iOS.

[citation][nom]notsleep[/nom]w8 comes with dx 11.1. will w9 come with dx 12 or 11.2?[/citation]
in best case MSFT will stop playing with DirectX and instead use open industry standards. But they wont, since they want to look in its users. Isn't it fun that MS users believe that they have an open system, but they are forced to buy Windows? If MSFT used OpenGL the games would work on Linux(Android), Windows and OSX and give the customers a choose in what operating system to use.

MSFT is not interested in that since they never have succeeded in a market where they dont have monopoly. After 30+ year MSFT still makes 94% of their profit from Windows/Office.

Windows Ultimate 300 dollar. OSX ultimate 29 dollar.
MSFT Office 300-500 dollars. Pages/Keynote/Numbers 40 dollars.

People talk about the "Apple tax" (witch is a myth). The MSFT tax seems to be accepted. MSFT have a gross profit upward 80%!!!

We need a real alternative to Windows.

[citation][nom]soundping[/nom]And Mark Dean said the PC is dead.[/citation]

People are forced to buy PCs. If you want to game, you are forced to buy windows thanks to MSFT monopoly/DX.
The fun thing is that the PostPC era is here. 2012 20% of all computers will be tablets. People will get more educated and start to understand that they don't need a PC. Beside heavy photo editing/video editing/hard core gaming. Smartphones/Tablets are fast enough in 2012.

Just hook up you smartphone to a screen + bluetooth keyboard and you can do everything beside the things described above. X86 will be phased out. ARM 15 Quad cores at 2.5ghz that costs 25 dollars and uses less then 2 watt will be used in laptops, computers, tablets, smarphones this year. Finally we can put to rest 40 years of backwards legacy in X86 and start to use real 64bit RISC SoCs.

(i used 64bit computers 1995. Had a 64bit OS in 1997. MSFT/Intel are always late)
