They may lose a very small minority of consumers, sure, but the vast majority they will not.

Upgrade wise, it does not matter what operating system you use. Windows and Linux will both run on a desktop PC, both old and new, fine for basic functionality perfectly. If you are a power user then you may be upgrading to fit your needs regardless of OS.

Why would you even buy an android tablet, which are mostly for entertainment and a toy, over Windows? Both OS have their place, but the blind hate for Windows is old. Linux won't go to far for the desktop market though, Windows is a well known name to consumers, and marketed heavily; Linux is just to fragmented with no marketing or use for consumers also.

For general purpose use, gaming, music, videos, and other software I need Windows. 95% of the software and hardware I use isn't supported on Linux.

Are you serious? How can you not see Windows as a joke, they had mostly everything right with Windows 7 and they turned the start menu into a fisher price toy and the major updates (used to be service packs) is now in the windows store instead of the updates where it should be located. Android has been improving and it has a far better UI than Windows start screen. They don't have oversized icons. Your first mistake with Linux is your expecting your existing hardware to work. I can't say for sure about software but the blind resistance against Linux. Linux is free and takes up less resources (Mint is faster than Windows 8). The 'blind hate' against Microsoft/Windows is there because MS is not listening to consumers, why should one downgrade because older software doesn't work or in W8's case an OS that people are afraid to even touch. Linux is built better and even though i haven't' used it for long, i hear they have better backwards compatibility with older software than Windows does.

The blind hate against Windows is understandable, but the blind hate against Android and Linux are not. Because you choose that Linux is not a viable OS because it doesn't support 95% of your software and hardware, well again that's not my problem but if PC vendors pushed Linux machines more, i guarantee you that they would start outselling Windows PC's. I don't really care that i am on W7 but it's ridiculous that people come to me saying they want W8 off their machine because something is wrong with it (it was a similar case with Vista). MS is blowing it and while i haven't turned many people on Linux yet (W7 has that familiarity) Linux is slowly gaining more acceptance and no, i checked and other than some games i have and some software, Linux works just fine. I actually recently built a PC that works great with Linux and i didn't have to do much to change anything so it all checks out. I don't need WIndows much and W7 is fine for gaming. I didn't test all my games (because a few ran under W98 or XP) but i don't really need Windows.

I've come across a few PC's that don't work well with Linux, but again you can't expect your existing hardware/software to work with Linux when it was built to work for Windows. You might need WIndows more than me but then i used to think Windows was the only platform and early on i tried LInux out and it didn't meet my needs during that time but Linux has improved since i last tried it out and considering it works well for me now, no i don't need any new Windows. I'd really just be throwing my money away on something i don't need.

1. Metro was most likely designed for their surface line using x86. The new interface didn't turn out well for them, but the updates that are restoring the Start Menu look promising. It was their first attempt at this new interface, and it will be good with some work. Windows 8 is mainly an interface issue. Have not had a single blue screen since Windows 8 released on my Windows 8 systems, it's a very stable and well performing operating system.

2. You can't even compare android to Windows, they serve two difference purposes entirely.

3. When did I say I expected my hardware or software to work?

4. The customer isn't always right, but in the case of metro they didn't do well.

5. Who has blind hate against android or Linux?

6. Of course it's not your problem, why on earth would it be? I use Linux in certain times, but it's not a viable choice for most of my use.

7. In it's current state no Linux will never outsell Windows to the majority of consumers. A user who thinks deleting their browser icon deletes the internet will find it hard to use Linux, and all that software and hardware that people want or have will not work on Linux. If Linux is to get market share developers needs to support it, and someone has to market it heavily.

8. Valve is pushing Linux gaming, and that's good, but if you are a gamer, not a casual, then Linux will not fill anyones gaming needs at this moment.

It's all fine and dandy that you can make due without Windows, but most people cannot. I do like Linux, and use it occasionally, but I am not stupid either. Defining better when it comes to an operating system is a matter of perspective too. Sure, Linux may be "technically" better, but if it cannot support your needs then it's dead on arrival. There are many good uses for Linux is the consumer and business sector, but for a typical desktop PC for a consumer it's not a good option unless you just need basic, basic, functionality, but smartphones already do that. It also highly varies based on the individuals needs.

...sleek, light and stylish... I hear Vista all over again when they say Windows 9. Though nobody would say Vista was light.

Windows 9 is supposed to be what Windows 8 was supposed to be. -Maybe

The software is going to be attractive, and it’s going to be a unified interface, something Windows 8 could only dream of. -Smells like BS

It’s going to work on multiple device types without trying to turn everything into a single device, and it’s going to be a necessary upgrade for enterprise, not your only choice when Windows 7 goes out of service. - Windows 7 is already the Windows XP for Microsoft. A substantial portion will be on 7 until 2020, protected or not unless 9 is substantially more innovative, works better than 7 and retains all the abilities of 7. The primary benefit to XP is that it retained compatibility, and so does 7 for the most part, but 8 does not and of of course 9 wont do anything 8 didn't do will it?

The portrayal of Windows 8 as something beautiful and fun in its own right simply didn't attract most people. - No bull there, and neither did Vista.

Utility Utility Utility Utility Utility Utility Utility Utility ! If its not useful as the first priority and characteristic we don't care how sleek light or stylish it is, even if its the only option on the market at the time. We also don't want discombobulated OS which 8 is, and we WONT BUY IT OR RENT IT!

rent OS...
have this M$ think for some hard-earned money's people to spend for upgrading their OS
only last for a month?
find a new way to milking consumer,eh?
Looks like the new CEO is even more greedier than Balmer. Hope SteamOS will peak up by then. SteamOS for games, and Linux for other stuff.

behind new CEO, there is old person 'you-know-who' that always 'innovatively' thinking the way to squeeze more cash from consumer...

lol WHo???? say it loud!~!!!!!!
