you know, if sony does go for a 256 or 512gb of ssd storage and 16gb of ram, Microsoft is going to lose this generation, right?

you could install some of the important bits to the ssd, it could load almost if not the entire game to ram, makeing load times non existant.

the ps4 if they do this, would probably equal 300$ in total cost when they come out (2014 at earliest) and if the 360 just has a spinning disc at launch... they are so screwed.

[citation][nom]wemakeourfuture[/nom]You missed a large component, publishing. Major studios backed Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. If you cannot get movie titles onto your media it isn't going far. I agree with everything you have stated.[/citation]

Wasn't the final nail in the coffin, retailers? I think it was Wal-Mart who announced they'd only carry blu-ray and then there was no more speculation.

[citation][nom]Dangi[/nom]That's why I would go with HD DVD, no need for a license, more capacity for each layer and also is a way better than BD if you plan to use as an anticopying device, at least in Europe there is no HD DVD writer or any HD DVD at all[/citation]

It's funny because all those benefits you listed is why Blu-ray won! Not HD-DVD you got it mixed up. Blu-ray has more storage capacity up to 128gb where HD DVD capped at 30gb. Blu-ray DRM has an extra 2 layers of security when compared to HD-DVD and Blu-ray has region codes which honestly suck in my opinion but for industries it means more cash.

[citation][nom]LordConrad[/nom]Don't forget that many people still can't get, or can't afford, high speed internet. Game companies won't give up all those sales by switching to a download-only ecosystem.[/citation]
Who, in 2012, can afford a $300 game console and $60 per game, but can't afford high speed internet? It's not 2002 anymore, dial up is dead and nobody uses it except 3rd world countries - those people aren't playing video games anyway so who cares what they want in a game console.

Everything I read about this console sounds like classic Microsoft - no innovation, just copying their competitors and hoping it works out for them. Nobody needs a touch screen on their controller, that might impress a 9 year old kid playing Mario World, but serious gamers would rather their controller be light and effective.

And seriously, who enjoys going to Best Buy to buy a game, when it makes much more sense to just download it and avoid the blue shirt morons trying to sell you a 5 year warranty on that game? Put a big fat hard drive in the console and cut out the middlemen to make games cheaper - then we're talking!

[citation][nom]kellybean[/nom]Infinity huh, what is wrong with Xbox 720? Will they put the crappy 8 tile UI on it too?[/citation]

A sideways 8 maybe...

The problem and the main reason why most people are opposed to games being digital only is because price will not go down. They will still sell at $60. The PC has Steam and we're lucky that their business benefits us cheap bastards but if you make games digital only then companies like Sony or Microsoft will charge as much as they can for as long as they can, no more cheap games. It's just like Origin, the platform is ok but the prices are ridiculous when compared to Steam.

Supply and demand rule the world regardless of who is in charge of setting the prices. When demand goes down, so will the prices. It's one of the few rules that is rarely broken.
