[citation][nom]spentshells[/nom]Sony must be making a killing licensing Blueray[/citation]
Sony doesn't outright own the rights to bluray. It's owned by a consortium of various corporations of which sony is only a fraction.

[citation][nom]A Bad Day[/nom]Subsidized by inflated game prices.[/citation]

Just like every console in history. But don't forget they'll also get revenue from video and audio entertainment and subscriptions, therefore I'd be surprised if it ended up costing more than $500.

Oh and Tom's seems to lack reading comprehension, it'll be 4GB not 8. The 8 is in the devkit which typically contains double the ram to hold the debugging tools.

Blu-ray is owned by a consortium of almost 20 companies.

I'm hoping Microsoft has two versions of this, one with and one without Kinect 2 included, for those that don't want the extra features or cannot afford it. If that's the case, then allow to connect a separate Kinect 2 Device, much like how the XBOX 360/Kinect currently work.

I just hope that we'll still be able to buy games on physical media. Not everyone has high speed internet or unlimited bandwidth.

No physical media mean no resell of old games, no renting at the video club, can't bring the game to play at a friend house and so on...

[citation][nom]CaedenV[/nom]I am sure it could be 8GB... but as consoles use ram so much more efficiently I don't think they will 'need' the extra 4GB. Or put another way, game machines running much higher resolutions/settings/textures, and running multiple programs rarely go past 4GB of ram in use, so I think they would see 8GB of ram as a waste on a console where ram is use more effectively than on a normal PC... but then again, ram is cheap.+1080p 30fps graphics, with hardware capable of doing at least 2x AA and AF, and with 1-2GB of GDDR..[/citation]Lets look the other way. it could be use for xbox GPU "paging cache". It is cheaper to have 8GB of RAM DDR3+1GB GDDR5 than 4GB DDR3+2GB GDDR5. So dont be surprise microsoft might be trying to benefit the cheap RAM thing and cut corners @ GPU VRAM.

[citation][nom]zybch[/nom]Well the still have to recoup the $8billion+ they bribed studios with to drop HD-DVD (a better standard from the start).[/citation]
.... HDDVD is and was never a better standard. The video quality was comparable between the two, but Blue Ray had the far superior audio. Plus it was cheaper to licence, cheaper to build, and cheaper to make media for, and that is the only reason it made it anywhere.

you raise a good point, but I look at my own system which has 1.2GB of GDDR and it is more than good enough for 1080p gaming at 60fps, with a lot of AA/AF, and I generally mod games to give me a further vision than is standard, so I would bet that they would think 1GB of GDDR with 4GB of system ram would be enough.

When push comes to shove I would bet on the greed of a console manufacturer sticking to minimum specs any day of the week :D .

But seriously though, I am stoked about the new consoles coming out (not including WiiU). This is going to bring console gaming up to the level most of us have been enjoying for a few years now. Getting consoles up to this level will push PC games (ports and native) to levels we have been wanting for a while now.
And I am not complaining about the graphics of games that are released today. Modern graphics are of pretty high quality, and I am generally happy with them on my own rig. What this higher hardware threshold will allow for is greater variety in digital assets (more people, more types of buildings/plants/clutter/etc.), more interesting level design because they will have huge amounts of space to play in, and higher resolution packs for background things like landscapes. It will finally make games feel immersive again!
Old school games were immersive because of the gameplay. You did not care about things being realistic because they frankly could not pull it off. Today you have developers pulling out there hair pouring all of their time into making games look 'real' when the hardware simply cannot do real. With the better hardware they will have to work less on how to make things look good because they will need less work-arounds to pull it off. My hope is that this means we will get a new focus on gameplay and story that we almost completely missed for this entire gen of games.

[citation][nom]JOSHSKORN[/nom]So the XBOX Infinity may have a DVR? I think we sort of figured that .I'm all for integrating the Kinect 2 with the Xbox Infinity. I can't wait to see the specs on this thing. It'll dictate my next PC build since I'm primarily a PC gamer.[/citation]

I, too, am waiting for the next round of consoles to finish being released so that I can be sure my next build meets or exceeds those specifications.

As with anything making a console is all about profit. If this generation showed us anything was that the best console in terms of specs or hardware is not the best for making a profit. Look at how Sony did, they lost Billions of dollars with the PS3. I can safely say that the next step with both Microsoft and Sony would be to deliver a console that is better than the WiiU but not substantially, as they'll be aiming to keep the costs down as much as possible so they can make a profit.

8gb of RAM my ass, I say 4gb if lucky 2gb most likely.

[citation][nom]Dangi[/nom]That's why I would go with HD DVD, no need for a license, more capacity for each layer and also is a way better than BD if you plan to use as an anticopying device, at least in Europe there is no HD DVD writer or any HD DVD at all[/citation]
HD-DVD is a dead format. It makes much more sense to use Blu-Ray because the console can then also be used as a Blu-Ray player.

ugh, blu-ray is a gawd awful medium for program data, the seek times are brutal... its great for movies, yes, not so much for data, now we'll get to enjoy ps3-style loading times in next generation consoles too!

I say it should cost $1200 and Microsoft should still take losses for it. 4k resolution gaming is a must, as well as BDXL, and some sort of killer graphics chip, with crazy specs unheard of before. The price will go down eventually. This way it will still be powerful enough by the time they introduce the next console. And it will push them harder to develop the next one too.

THANK YOU! It even says it in the CVG link:
Current codename 'Durango' dev kits boast a CPU with "four hardware cores, each divided into four logical cores" and an impressive 8GB of RAM, XBW reports.

So many people are reporting that as the console will get it.

[citation][nom]kellybean[/nom]Infinity huh, what is wrong with Xbox 720? Will they put the crappy 8 tile UI on it too?[/citation]

It would be terrible marketing for Microsoft to use "Xbox 720" since a lot of customers associate 720 to 720p. They cannot use this to avoid confusion (Marketing 101).

You missed a large component, publishing. Major studios backed Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. If you cannot get movie titles onto your media it isn't going far. I agree with everything you have stated.
