Hi I'm about to change my desktop

and I'm looking for a VGA that is capable

of smoothly running SC2 on extreme settings

Here's the problem, I have a budget of $800

and I was planning to buy VGA around $150~250

but I cant make the decisions on my own because

there is this guy who will buy all the parts for me and

he almost insists that I buy VGA around $50~60 saying that

VGAs around that price would be more than capable for running SC2

on extreme settings. Im kind of confused since all the $700~800

budget desktops I have looked have VGAs ranging from $150~270

Are VGAs ranging from $50~60 really capable of running SC2 on extreme?

if not please suggest me other cards ranging from $100~200

For CPU im planning i5-2500 and 8G of RAM

Thanks

Solution
The short answer is: No, a $60 GPU will not play SC2 on max settings.
The longer, and better, answer is: SC2 with lots of units running around uses more CPU power than a lot of games. I don't own the game, but the previews I saw looked pretty darn good even on "medium" graphics settings. A $90 card like a HD6670 could handle that. As a Blizzard game though, SC2 runs better on nVidia cards. I think you'd be very happy with a GTX460 for around $160. If you want to go cheaper, a GTS450 for $110-$120 should be pretty good too. If you want a little more future-resistance, a GTX560 for ~$190 is a good choice under your $200 budget.

Don't know if it will play SC2 on extreme settings but anyway ; you gonne play the rest of your live only SC2 ? Get the more expensive one if you ever wanne play other / newer games. A 50-60 dollar card is rubbish.
Other better cards in your price range; GTX 460, GTX 560, HD 6870. Make sure your PSU is up to it, they all need a good, stable PSU with enough watts and amps.

Rob is right number one rule when buying IT hardware is always buy higher tis will give you more future proof headroom for newer games and software. Also try stick to the GTX 5 series if possible very decent performance to price ratio. you can never really spend to much on hardware like graphics cards.

You could get a used HD 4850 for close to that price and play in extreme at around 20 fps if your screen is less than 1080p, or a 5670 could play in extreme at 720p or less, but it would be idiotic to pair a card that weak with an i5-2500 if your goal is to play games. Get at least a GTX 460 or an HD 6850.

This is good advice. I built my new pc last month (<$600 after rebates) for the purpose of playing lag-free SC2...I play xbox for everything else. Stock i5-2500k and GTX 460 runs everything smoothly on Ultra/Extreme. Hopefully EVGA brings back their $30 rebate on the Superclocked GTX 460 SE which will bring it down to $120 on Newegg. The ironic part is that I actually prefer medium to low graphics when I play (1v1) to reduce the clutter on the screen.

GTX 560 is definitely a solid bet if you want to future-proof your build. All depends on where you want to spend your money.

GLHF.
