Hey guys! Big fan of this site!!! :) just a Question . Will the rx 470 bottleneck my i3 3220 processor. Is it any severe bottleneck? Just need it for playing Just cause 3, Batman Arkham Knight , and Some more new games!! (40 or above fps) and 1 more doubt. I just have a doubt whether the rx 470 cause heat and noise issues? And should i choose the sapphire version with 1 fan or ASUS rog 2 fan? Thanks a lot

Solution
Yes, there will be some bottleneck with the 1060. I'm currently running the same processor as yours with a GTX 960 and I'm seeing bottleneck in some games that needs 4 cores. So the GTX 1060 is definitely out of hand. The RX 470 should be okay.

You're playing at 1080p right? 40 FPS seems reasonable but expect more drops for Just Cause 3.

The Asus one is likely more quiet and have better temperatures, so go for that.

So u say above 40 - 45 fps on arkham Knight but will it be in Just cause 3 ? I was about to buy a gtx 960 but % of bottleneck will be how much in a rx 470? If it's just 20-25 % it's OK! I could see only I3 6100 benchmarks with rx 470 and it ran it 97-100 % . (Since it also has only 2 cores). Thanks

What you buy depends on the prices you can get them at.

What exact cards are you looking at, what prices are they ??

While that old i3 may hold back a 1060 3gb or a 470 a bit on CPU intensive titles if they're only $20-30 or so more than a 960 then its makes little sense if any to go with the older card.

I ran a gtx 970 with an i3 3220 for a few months & the majority of the time it could hold a steady 60fps absolutely fine & absolutely minimum drops to mid 40's on stuff like gta v & jc 3.

Arkham knight you might see drops to high 30's because even after all the work they did it's still a hard game to run.

I played Arkham Knight before they patched it up. My FPS were in the 30 to 60 region (I played with Vsync) with stutters. The current version is said to be fixed, although I'm seeing more of a mixed response, but my initial playthrough wasn't bad at all. Don't play it with any of the gameworks settings enabled and you'll be okay.
As for Just Cause 3, I haven't played it but I know the game drops FPS during explosions, combat and at random times too. I can't say from experience.

For me, Rise of the tomb raider wasn't giving me better FPS than my old 750 Ti on the same i3. In games like Witcher 3, I was getting a significant boost over the 750Ti, so they all depend on the games you play.

I can't give you the percentage amount for the bottneck as they will vary. The 6100 is better than the 3220 so you won't find much bottleneck despite it having 2 cores.

^ arkham knight (IMO) was for the majority not as broken on release as it was made out to be.

The main outcry was from people with real high end components not getting significantly better performance than people with midrange stuff like you & me.

I never found it unplayable on release & in all honesty for me the patched release isn't really that significantly better than the original release for me.

I still say dependant on prices I would absolutely 100% not buy a 960 now unless it was very cheap.
If a 470 or 1060 3gb is within $30-40 price wise it still makes more sense even if it's limited usage/fps wise.
The future proofing aspect & the ability to up graphics settings to high or ultra (because the 960 is solidly stuck at medium settings now imo) make that extra expenditure worthwhile.

I can support that statement. The 960 I have currently doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. It's only slightly better than the 950 and a lot slower than the 970. The 960 I have isn't actually mine, but a relative's who gave it to me for safekeeping. 🙂

The 1060 cards are looking really good and a lot of my friends jumped on to them, leaving me in the dust, lol.

Yeah, Arkham Knight wasn't bad at all performance wise and it was a great game in my opinion. It's shame it received so much backlash.

Yeah but it's just 20$ diff (Rx 470 from gtx 960). As long as it is better than 960 in most titles, I am OK with it guys! I left 1060 as it bottlenecked 70% of it. But you think sapphire edition of rx 470 is OK (I think ref) since it's 50$ less than Asus rog (2 fan). Is 470 OK with 1 fan (as I heard amd cards are a little noisy and give heat issues unless u tune them in Wattman) ( Even the fan size is small) .

P. S [ I found a video which mentioned rx 480 benchmarks and usage of gpu with I3 4130, It was steady { 90-100 %} and even the gtx 970 had 100%]

The only sad part is that Rx 470 and gtx 1060 are of the same price lol!

Hard choice there. The 1060 is definitely the better card. If you have future plans for any upgrades to the motherboard and processor, then 1060 would prove more beneficial.

I have a very strange case. Could be that I have poor airflow in my tower but my single fan Asus 750Ti had the same temperatures as the Asus dual fan GTX 960. They both reach mid 70s at max and idle in mid 40s. The GTX 960 is more quiet, but I can't tell by how much because of my noisy stock CPU cooler.

If you can get the Sapphire one for $50 less than the asus, then go for that.

What are the prices on the two versions of the 470 & the cheapest 1060 3gb ????

If the cheapest 470 is $50 cheaper than both the others then its the best buy easily , the single fan is fine for a 150w tdp card like the 470.
Yes it'll be somewhat noisier than a dual fan model but will run at similar temps - its really a non issue IMO.

If the 1060 is a similar price to that single fan 470 then just go for the 1060 irregardless , it makes no sense to go for the weaker card when the more powerful one is the same price.

I'm sorry to ask another question here. Since you paired up gtx 970 with i3 3220 and found no major problems, gtx 1050 ti oc will not be a bad combination right?
