Question Ryzen 5600x quickly going to 100 degrees C at boot and shutting down

Hello everyone,
a friend of mine has just put together a new pc, but whenever he boots it the CPU 5600x goes very quickly to 90+ degrees celsius and shuts down obviously.
He didn't even install the OS, this happens in the BIOS. All connections and components seem to be correct and fine.
  • He tried sending back the CPU and having it replaced (both 5600x). same thing happens.
  • He tried changing the mobo. (First B550, second X570)
  • He tried both with AIO liquid cooler and the stock amd wraith cooler, same thing happens.
  • No overclock done, all stock auto settings.
  • Tried disabling Precision Boost in the BIOS
  • Updated the BIOS to latest on the first B550 mobo. (done without the cpu installed obviously)
He's using the PSU from his old pc, which was working fine the previous day, before switching.

Tomorrow as a last resort he will try with another PSU, maybe also updating the BIOS on the newer X570 mobo, but we don't have much hope.
In the meantime is there anything else you guys can think of and recommend? We are really at a dead end and don't know what else to think.

These are the specs of the system:
  • Asus TUF gaming B550-plus / Asus ROG Strix X570-f gaming
  • AMD Ryzen 5600x
  • CoolerMaster Masterliquid ML240L v2 (AIO liquid cooler)
  • Corsair vengeance 32gb (2x16) 3200 mhz DDR4
  • Corsair force mp600 M2 nvme ssd
  • PSU Corsair AX860 Platinum

does the same thing everytime.
Even if the coolers weren't working properly, I don't think the CPU in the BIOS would normally get to 90+ degrees that quickly.
It literally lasts not even 2 minutes. :confused_old:

An improperly installed CPU cooler...yes it can rise to that temp that fast.
Its almost like not having one at all.

In fact, if you did install just a heatsink properly (even without fans) then CPU temp could not reach such high temps so fast. The fact that it happens with two different units is just strengthening the suspicion. You guys are doing something wrong when installing them.

Surely not loose on multiple motherboards.

Thermal paste looked squished when you pulled off the coolers?
Cleaned the CPU and applied new thermal compound when switching coolers?
Using the correct AM4 mounting hardware for each cooler?
Making sure to remove the stock AMD mounting brackets when indicated?

Yeah, loose was the wrong word to use. I meant the AM4 backplate and 2 retention bars weren't installed correctly.
Some of these coolers just reuse them, and they're a trickier to install correctly if the motherboard is already secured to the chassis.

As has been posted...something's wrong with the CPU cooler mounting process. It's not uncommon the process being used is incorrect or misunderstood. You have to examine everything: screws could be too long and not pulling the cooler tight against the heat spreader. The threads of one could be damaged so it doesn't tighten leaving the cooler high on one corner...with same result. Many coolers use a standoff to set spacing, one for Intel one for AMD. So much to speculate on.

In the face of repeated failure it's often well advised to get someone else on the project; a new set of eyes looking things over often finds simple errors repeated over and over.
