Question Safest way to run a game server?

What would be the safest steps I can take to host a public game server off of my computer with protection against DDOS attacks, possible data theft, or just getting into my network with intentions other than joining and playing on the server?

You would be "safer" running a dedicated server (could just be another PC), not hosted from your PC.
