I bought a Samsung S50A soundbar and connected it to Phillips PUS8505 TV via HDMI cable. The TV has four HDMI ports akd they are all ARC. I connected the soundbar to third HDMI port and I have my PS5 connected to first HDMI port.

When I first paired it and tried it on PS5 it worked fine. I then opened up Disney+ on my TV (ps5 was in rest mode) and there was no sound coming from soundbar. However, the soundbar was listed under TV sources and I could see light prompts on it when changing volume or pressing any buttons on soundbar remote.

I changed the sound out mode to “Stereo uncompressed” and “Multichannel” but the sound was still missing.

After that I unplugged TV, soundbar and PS5 completely. After 15 mins I plugged the soundbar and TV back in and the sound was working again. After switching to PS5 and and back to Disney+ (or any other app on TV) the sound disappeared but there were still light prompts on soundbar and it was clearly connected to TV.

After that I replaced the HDMI cable with optical cable and the sound worked. But now comes the weird part - I was playing on PS5 and turned off the soundbar via the remote and then turned it back on - and the sound was gone again! I tried resetting the TV and soundbar by unplugging everything three times and now not even unplugging is helping.

This is my first soundbar and I’m at a loss. Why is this whole thing so hard to use between multiple plugged devices? Even when using the most basic settings and basic connection type (optical cable) I can’t understand why the sound is not working but the soundbar is clearly connected to the TV.

You could go through the TV's Sound and Connectivity settings to see if they needed to be changed for soundbar use, e.g. turning off internal speakers and for connectivity, the EasyLink (HDMI-CEC) settings for System Audio Control. (Personally on my TV I find it easier to turn off all of the Easylink options and rely on my soundbar's remote control rather than the TV, but every TV is different).
