I have just read the review of this monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 955DF DynaFlat 19") at
http://the-ctrl-alt-del.com
Im looking for a 19" monitor and I quite fancy this one.
Does anyone have one of these if so what are they like ?
It will mainly be used for playing games. Also the horizontal pitch is 20 what does this translate into for the vertical or is it diagonal pitch that others use ?

Thanks

Samsung Tech support claims that this is .24 diagonal dot pitch. I can say that it's a great monitor at a price that can't be beat. Easy on the eyes, it's one of the cheapest flat screens out there.

For a little bit more, you can check out the 900IFT by samsung. It has the same tube, but can go up another notch in resolution & has a better refresh rate (76hz) at 1600*1200.

Thanks for the replys,
I have been comparing the specs between the 955DF and the 900IFT , Its very hard to chose between the 2 as the only diffrence I can see is the higher resolutions and refresh rates of the IFT. So a few more questions :)

1. Are the higher resolution and refresh rates the only diffrence ?
2. Are they both exaclty the same tube ie have the same dot pitch (I have seen various website quoting .28 .24 .20 pitch)
3 Has any one tried both of these monitors so could therefore compare the 2 and see which is best ?
4 Is there a review of the IFT anywhere ?

Many thanks for any help you may have.

I've had a 955DF for 8 months. The 955 uses an invar mask tube (ie, standard) while the 900 uses a Sony trinitron type tube. Usually the former is preferred by those who want high precision and detail for fine text and graphics, while the latter generally has more vivid colors and contrast. Mine works nicely now, but at first I wasn't that thrilled with it. I did a lot of tweaking before I warmed up to it. I think as tubes burn in, they get better -- to a point anyway.

Compared to my 2.5 yr old ADI 6P, another 19", it might be physically larger and not quite as sharply focused but brighter. The flat screen is somewhat nicer, but it's not that big a deal as most decent 19"s have a fairly flat surface. The 955 is a good monitor for the $.

I can't really comment on the 900 because I haven't worked with one closely, but I am one of those who prefers precision and detail over drama and color -- I do a fair amount of desktop publishing, with an equal mix of graphics and text work. Don't bother worrying about the details of what happens at resolutions beyond 1280 -- the only way you could use 1600 x 1200 is with like a 25" monitor. Even on 21"s I think it all gets too small at 1600. And generally speaking refresh rates beyond 85 are a waste -- as long as you can't see the flicker, who cares? Besides, increasing refresh tends to reduce sharpness, too...

actually, the 900ift is another shadow mask tube... has the same tube as the 955df, just slightly tweaked for the higher end user. as to the refresh, I prefer to keep it up at around 85hz... it doesn't seem to blur anything, and keeps it nice and sharp.

Sorry to resurrect an ages old old thread, but I just wanted to point out that my old Samsung 955DF is still plugging away and now thanks to driver improvements has the same resolution as the previously mentioned more expensive version, and at virtually the same refresh rate to boot. (1600x1200@70Hz) If anyone else still has this monitor and comes upon this thread in search of driver updates or whatever, I recommend using windows XP's native support drivers over the last Samsung drivers from years ago. Only the microsoft drivers have allowed me to go up to that resolution/refresh rate while keeping the box checked which states "only display modes supported" or whatever.

I can't remember having such good luck with Vista's drivers but I can't be 100% sure on that. I'll test it out if someone wants, as I have a dual boot system.

I hope this helps someone because I feel guilty for resurrecting this ancient thread, but I came upon it from searching for drivers and I assume someone else might too.

Until I get that 24 inch HD flatscreen, this is not too bad.
