I run WinXP Pro on an Asus A7n8X motherboard with an ATA WD120g hard drive. I've just bought a SATA Maxtor 80g hard drive which I want to use just for storing files but I'm having problems getting windows to recognise it.

I think I need to install the si3112 driver which is on my motherboard installation cd but I can't seem to do it. The readme file states I need to update the driver under the SCSI and Raid Controller tab of Device Manager. The only driver shown is called XMASSCSI Controller but when I point it to where the si3112 driver windows says it cannot find a better match.

I've also got the Maxblast 3 software to partition and format the drive but I presume I can only do that once the right controller has been installed.

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong ?

Cheers.

Does a screen come up when you boot up the computer saying Sil3112a or summik indicating the SATA controller. If it doesnt that means that the controller is not enabled, if you cant enable it in BIOS then there might be a jumper on the board you cant use.
If it is enabled, then im not sure whats wrong, try downloading the latest drivers from your board manufacturers web site...I h8 the Sil3112a controller.

I didn't realise there was a jumper on the motherboard. it is now working fine so thanks very much for your help.

Only thing is I thought it was my bios so I updated it and I've got problems with that now ! On first start up its fine but when I reboot the system is dead. Only way to get it going again is to clear the CMOS. Could the battery be dead ?
