Built my father-in-law a budget PC two years ago. Specs:

QDI BX mobo
Celeron 466mhz
Matrox G200 AGP 8mb
Creative AWE64 ISA
128mb RAM

The system's getting old but he aint rich, and doesn't want to spend money on upgrading yet.

I have a spare SBLive card and was thinking of swapping his ISA AWE64 out. Is this likely to make any appreciable difference to system performance (audio accelerator and all that)? He plays games a lot and is quite happy with the audio quality of the AWE64.

Well, it might help but not by much. His main bottleneck is the graphics card but it shouldn't hurt to replace his AWE64 with an SB live.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

It won't add sound quality. In fact I think the AWE64 sounded a little better in stereo. It would add 4 speaker mode, surround sound, etc. but if he's only using two speakers I really don't see the point.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

For it's time, the Awe64 was awesome. Hardly any background noise (low sN), and wonderful sound reproduction. I still have two, wrapped up in plastic back in the 'archives'.
The SB live is a noticable step up. For the longest time, I figured nothing could top my 64, but the Live did. But, like all other things, you give and take.

Live cards don't play well with many computers. I would actually go so far as to say they don't play well with *any* computers, but I'll leave that .0000000002% error in there. You might seriously consider using a similiar card with a different name brand.

Rich is the nation that has many war heroes. Long since forgotten...
