Question Screen black after login - when does Windows load graphics drivers?

This is an HP laptop running Windows 11. I'm trying to get to the bottom of an issue my customer is having. They told me that as soon as they enter their pin, the screen goes black. They say there is nothing on the screen, not even the mouse cursor - but they can hear the mouse working if they click around on the screen. I assume they are hearing a UAC popup or something. Update history shows no updates since 4/26/2024.

Of course, everything is working fine for me. Since I don't have the laptop in a fail-state, I'm thinking of what might have been causing the issue. That had me wondering at what point Windows loads the graphics driver, whether or not it happens before or after the login. I never pondered if Windows was running the basic driver before it loads any discreet drivers.

This machine doesn't have discreet graphics but rather running UHD, so probably not the issue, but the question still stands.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

What is the model + SKU for your laptop? If you're able to get display till you reach the login screen, you might want to restart the laptop while holding down the Shift key. You should be able to get into Safe Mode and then see if you get any display after logging in.

scroll down to the Get to safe mode from the Windows sign-in screen:

Hey thanks! Actually, I've not seen the problem. But my customer claims there is video until AFTER the login screen - once you've entered the PIN.
