Have one Toshiba laptop P200-RT2, had Vista on it but wouldn't boot. Thought to try Win XP Pro disc to see if it would boot, instead entire hard drive got reformatted. Don't have recovery software and can't get any from Toshiba! Have another Toshiba Laptop with Win7 and do have recovery software for that. Could I use the Win7 version to at least get Toshiba software back on the old laptop. I downloaded the drivers for the old but they won't load for some reason. Please help, husband isn't very happy with me, it is his computer that isn't working now.

What is the other recovery software called? Usually, Windows 7 programs work fine on Vista because Windows 7 is heavily based on it and their filesystems are basically identical.

Thank you for responding. I have downloaded recuva to cd, and am now doing a deep scan on the older computer. Maybe I'll get lucky with that. It says the deep scan will take an hour. There's nothing on the P200 except the operating system, unless it can find the Toshiba files.
The recovery software is for a L675 model Toshiba. It has 4 discs, the first is Windows Recovery Environment. The next three are part of a set, I think they contain the operating system and other software? Maybe the Toshiba drivers?

I don't have a problem going back to the original operating system as it is what came with the laptop and we have the Product Key for it. I wouldn't have a product key for a second install of Windows 7 if I were to use the L675 discs (it is licensed to us but for the laptop it is already on). I was thinking if I could get the Toshiba software to work, I could move back to Vista once the drivers etc., are all loaded. I don't know if that would work though.
Would it permanently damage the P200-RT2 to try the Toshiba Recovery Disks I have? Would I try the Windows Recovery Environment first?

Hi Elder, the Recuva program has finished running, it found 95,938 files (ignored 27090 of them) - took an hour and 36 minutes. I'm guessing that I should hit the recover button and take my chances? It asks where I want to restore the files and suggests I create a folder, which I have done called Recovery. But I am not sure what to do next?
Sorry just clicked that button and get a window asking do you want to restore to the same drive (this can reduce the chance of a successful recovery). More confused now. I'll leave the laptop plugged in and wait for further instructions! lol
No way to do that unfortunately - am working with two laptops, the one with XP doesn't have screen shot abilities. It only has the operating system, no other programs and most of the Toshiba drivers wouldn't load. I have no internet access with it either.
There are a lot of .dll files and .bmp files then others look like email files or perhaps internet links my husband has clicked on in the past. I created a recover file in documents, but when I go to save it is says some of the file names are too long to be recovered (53 total)...then asks if I want to change the destination folder. Not sure if that is just for those 53 files or not. The good laptop needs to be plugged in, so have created yet another file in My Docs and clicked on the recover files button. It says it will take 2 hours. I guess the good news is the files that were found by Recuva will be saved.
The files were recovered to a file folder (except for 353 of them)......I had to shut that computer down when it was finished copying the files in order to use the cord to charge up this laptop (I only have one cord right now). Downloaded Lightshot, it won't load on the P200-RT2 - I'm guessing it's the same problem as with the Toshiba recovery drivers.
Is there a next step with the Recuva recovered files - to get them to install somehow? There are lots of them. A good number of dll.....I'm assuming they are drivers that are missing?
I don't know if I can save those recovered files to disc...I know that I can copy files to the laptop, but not sure if I can copy files from it.

Fwiw, I went to the Recuva site and read their instructions and recovered the files to where they were supposed to be. So far, things seem to be working. I have yet to get connected to the internet but the old XP laptop did show the wireless connection's name. Just have to remember how to set it up in XP. This process has made me realize how great Windows 7 is when it comes to doing things for you. Once I get things set up, will try a Windows Update to see if that will work.
