Seagate 7200.11 storage failures

My PC has a Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS hard drive made in Thailand. And my brother has the same series and model in his PC. My drive has seen 3,797 hours of on power operation with 345 start/stop counts according to SMART. It typically runs at 27-29°C.

I always keep a few spare drives handy. Currently, I have two WD Caviar WD6400AAKS' sitting in a storage box.

What is the current MTBF for the 7200.11 series?

I got the same drive about 7 months ago, 4064 hours power on time and 98 start/stop counts. Made in Thailand and has the SD15 firmware (which I recently found out has issues with randomly making the drive undetectable by the BIOS).

It was fine up until about two weeks ago, it's started to make loud clicking and grinding noises when under heavy load. Good thing it's just a storage drive so it doesn't see that much use. I'm still debating whether I should send it back for a replacement, Seagate wants an extra $20 for them to ship the replacement "refurbished" drive first so I can move all of my data onto it. Chances are that the "new" drive will just experience the same fate.

mtbf for my Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS was ZERO hours , ZERO minutes , ZERO seconds .

And Im still waiting for a replacement 8 weeks later so the 5 year warranty is more theoretical than anything . Even if I ever do get a replacement I dont think I'd trust any data to it .

My WD black 640 gig arrived yesterday so I finally get my new christmas present running . Thanks for nothing seagate

I flashed my drive yesterday evening (1/22) with a boot CD created with the ISO image file MooseDT-SD1A-2D-8-16-32MB.ISO. No issues to report.

I bought my Seagate 7200.11 two weeks ago. Came home on Friday to hear the desktop's tower just clicking away. Screen just said "boot error insert bootable drive". The desktop had just been in sleep mode. Drive details:

I tried flashing the new firmware per Seagate's website, but with the Seagate drive installed, it wouldn't even boot from the CD drive.

My last Seagate purchase. Though the other 1TB options out there seem to be having their share of problems, too.

put a brand new build together 6/16 when the gtx 280 ftw came out. unfortunately purchased the 7200.11 500gb. first one lasted six weeks. second one lasted seven weeks. third one just died on 1/19, so about 12 weeks. i tried flashing the new firmware, tells me to take out all other sata drives, so i rip out my blue ray drive and since that's also my cd drive, i have to also rip apart my parents' computer to find a cd drive that is ide and not sata. put that drive into my computer and start it up and as the firmware starts up, it can't find the st3500320as that's in my computer anyway. i've lost three of these now. i was hoping against all hope that this firmware would fix it because i don't know if i can make myself start from scratch and install all of the software and hardware again. it will be four fifth or sixth time since the middle of june thanks to seagate.

their chat doesn't work (or hasn't since 1/19 at various times of the day) and their phone service also doesn't work today when i called. technical difficulties with that as well apparently.

I was concerned that the firmware installer would choke on my SATA Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-212D. As it turned out, I received no warnings that I recall and the drive was flashed successfully.

I just opened my case and took a look at my SATA setup. On my Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard, the ST3500320AS is connected to SATAII0 and the DVD drive is connected to SATAII5.

it cost me 240 bucks, but i'm so sick of reinstalling everything i own on all of these dead hard drives, i went to best buy and bought a velociraptor. i haven't seen too much negative about them. maybe going from the 7200 rpm barrashitpile to the 10000 rpm velociraptor will make gaming a little easier too.

I have a failed 750Gb AS drive that is one of the ones with the Thai Firmware SD15, in checking that out I find I also have 4 other drives but all ES 2 drives that are also effected and two ES ones that are OK.

After paying a bit over the odds for the ES drives I would never have expected this.

Will try updating the Bios on the ES drives

I have ordered an identical model AS drive and hopefully I can switch the PCB over and have it run long enough to get the data off it. For the cost of an identical HDD should still be cheaper than a Data Recovery company provided it works
