I have put off buying Seagate Barracuda ES.2 NS drives (ST31000340NS) for a raid array whose Areca controller won't work with the cheaper AS drives on the believe that the enterprise level constellation ES sata drives would arrive 2009Q3 as announced in Feb 2009. What happened to the pipeline?

From a Seagate technical person (I received this in an email on Nov 7):

------------
The Constellation drives are ST3500514NS ( 500GB ), ST31000524NS ( 1TB ) and ST32000644NS ( 2TB ). Tese drives are new to the channel, just released and hard to find, we are shipping nearly everything to the OEM accounts.

You should see them late January - early February, it takes around 90 days to fill the presold OEM orders. Pricing will be comparable to the Barracuda ES
------------

I am waiting for these too. They will be VERY low noise per data sheet.

Steffen

To answer my own question, I stumbled on the part numbers for the SAS2 versions of the Constellation ES drives:

SAS2 models of the Constellation ES drives:
ST3500414SS (500GB)
ST31000424SS (1TB)
ST32000444SS (2TB)

with SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) option:
ST3500415SS (500GB)
ST31000425SS (1TB)
ST32000445SS (2TB)

If you don't want to wait, the Barracuda XT should be effectively identical to the non-SED Constellation ES (at least according to someone I know at Seagate). I got a 2TB Barracuda XT (I was originally waiting for the Constellation ES drives as well), and I love it.

For those content with SATA, that may be true. But I would prefer SAS (although a SAS controller should be able to handle a mix of either), and AFAIK the
XT is only SATA.
