Seagate Hard Drive Retail Kit?

Solution

The 'kit' probably has a fancy box, instruction manual, SATA cable, maybe some mount screws.
The bare drive is just the drive, in a plain box.

Having said that..why an SSHD?

If all you care about is 'boot speed', OK. But a regular size SSD (120GB or larger), will do the same for a whole lot of other stuff.

2tb sshd w/8Gb Nand (ssd) - $123

vs

2Tb seagate barracuda - $80
60Gb Corsair Force LS SSD - $44
---------------------------------> $124

Looks to me more like your getting ripped off IMO.

What what the above doesnt show is the caching that the SSHD does. If you have a supported Intel motherbd you already have this function built in and the 60Gb ssd is going to cache way more than the sshd could.

If you have an AMD motherbd then you will need something like a sandisk readycache ssd which is 32Gb for about $50 (and includes the caching software since amd doesnt have this feature)

Just my 2cents which I hope you find insightful.

So 2 questions, firstly is the $80 Seagate drive any good?? I know that you can also get WD greens for cheaper but they are slower drives
Secondly even so, what do you guys think about using an SSD as a boot disk, My current 1TB WD Blue for games and a crappy 2TB for movies, music, downloads, etc?

the barracuda drive is the exact same drive minus the 8gb ssd cache.

Green drives are not recommended for system or game drive. They will power down regardless of any windows setting which can manifest itself as huge lag spikes when they need to power up to do something such as load a map or level.

Your second question, IMO, is a recommeneded setup and a green drive would be perfect in that less used role.

Hey guys, so update, I got a really good deal with a local seller for 3-4 750GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Hard Drives. What I would like to know is what would the best way to format them for windows be? I was thinking striped , but which is the fastest? BTW I dont care about backing up any of the data, it will just be movies and TV shows

For "movies and TV shows", why are you considering a striped RAID 0 array? Just have them as individual drives. You will see zero difference for that use.

I have had good luck with both 2tb wd greens and 3tb barracudas. If you have a personal preference then go with what you like. Both have similar warranty periods and processes; I've no complaints with either. The wd greens are in my server and store movies & such LoL.

Greens are good for what they are good for. Static files. Storing movies, music, etc.
Running applications, not so much.

The Green drives have evolved. yes the early ones weren't that good but this new generation, IMO, are quite reliable. Mine, ezrx versions, are about 3 yrs old now and in a server thats on 24/7. The original greens, ears version, lasted almost 2 before failing.

My Barracudas are about 2 yrs old now. They are in my editing rig so they are only on a few hrs a day.
Hmm. that would make the Samsung F4's close to 6 yrs old and still showing no signs of any errors.
