Second monitor no longer detected in Windows

First, this seems like it could be a Windows 11 issue or a graphics driver issue. I was unsure whether to post this in Graphics, Displays, or Windows 11.

Ok, so as of about 4 hours ago today, my second monitor stopped working. I am generally pretty computer proficient, and neither me nor my buddy who has worked in IT for the last 2 years could figure it out. So, for the last few days I have been extending my desktop onto a second monitor, using an HDMI to VGA adapter (which supports EDID information), and obviously a monitor hooked up. I am a college student with a laptop that I bring to class with me. Today, when I got back and went to plug in my monitor, it did not detect a video signal and power on. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T15p running Windows 11 (fully installed by OEM) with Intel UHD Graphics. So, I went to Display Settings to enable it and it had not shown up. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it still had not shown up. I pressed the detect display button and it still had no appeared. So at this point, I am thinking the adaptor died. So I go to plug it into my Xbox 360, the only other device I have with me that has an HDMI output. The monitor immediately turns on when I turn on the Xbox and displays correctly. So then I inspect the HDMI port on the laptop, and the adaptor to see if it has any damaged pins. Both appear fine. So I plug the laptop into my TV's HDMI port, and it immediately recognizes the TV and works fine. So at this point, the monitor has tested good, the adaptor cable has tested good, and the HDMI port on the laptop has tested good. So I restart my computer hoping it is a temporary driver glitch. Still, nothing. I restart it again, and enter the UEFI settings. I set UEFI settings so that the computer will default to outputting video on the HDMI port, and upon restart the second monitor powers on and shows the boot splash screen. Then as soon as the Windows login screen appears, the second monitor powers off and the login screen moves to the first monitor. I log in, check settings, and still it is not detected. So now I am thinking my drivers are wonky. I spend an hour or more uninstalling drivers, reinstalling them, trying different versions, trying different Intel Graphics control panels, periodically relaunching Settings and trying to detect the display, restarting several times, to no avail. Later I talk to my friend and he comes over to try to help. He plugs the monitor into his computer (through the HDMI to VGA adaptor), another Lenovo (different model and Windows 10 though) and the monitor immediately powers on and works like it has been with my computer up until a few hours ago. He leaves, and I dick with it some more, and every suggestion online suggests things I have already done. Also, the monitor worked in Safe Mode, but not in normal Windows with basic graphics drivers. I tried bootlogging but my computer is too fast to tell what was happening.

So to recap: All hardware seems fine. This issue appeared today. It is some sort of driver or software issue but not with Intel graphics drivers because the issue persists without them. I know I could probably get another monitor but this one was free and the only money I spent was $7 on the adaptor, and it is a cool old CRT that will do 80 Hz at the resolution I keep it at. Also, since it seems to be a software issue I am worried the issue may start happening on any other monitor after a few days like it did with this one.

Also I forgot to mention, the monitor does not even show up in device manager, not even as a malfunctioning or unrecognized device.

Look in Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer for any error codes, warnings, or event informational events that occurred just before or at the time(s) that the monitor stopped working.

And I am also wondering about that $7 adapter....

If possible try some other tests that do not include the adapter.

Thank you. I will do that today. The adaptor worked fine with a friend’s PC, and with my Xbox 360, but I might try replacing it. All I have right now to generate a video signal is my laptop and my Xbox, both which only have HDMI ports.

It appears the only errors logged I found in Reliability History/Monitor and event viewer were graphics drivers crashing, but that was after/during me reinstalling and restarting graphics drivers.
