Second monitor resolution not available

HI

I have just got a new laptop which has a vga and a hdmi output running windows 8.

I have a samnsung monitor that has vga and dvi inputs

When I connect the 2 vga sockets with a lead I am not allowed to pick the correct resolution for the second monitor (I select that I want the laptop screen off). I am offered 1600 by 1200 and my monitor is 1680 by 1050. It doesn't fill the screen and to be honest it does not look great.

(My old laptop this used to work great!)

What should I do to get the larger monitor to work properly?

Oddly, I just opened by nvidea and intel graphics options from the windows notification area.

Next time I went back the correct resolution was available and everything is fine....

Guessing that some sort of update took place - it was a new laptop afterall
