Second monitor won't connect, may be a video card problem

I just received my new computer today and switched over all my peripherals. The video card has 2 HDMI ports, 1 VGA port and 1 DVI port. 1 of the HDMI ports is not on the video card. When I tried to connect one of my monitors to the HDMI on the video card, it didn't work. However, it did work when I connected it to the HDMI farthest away. I have a second monitor that uses VGA and will not work with the VGA port. So far, the VGA port and 2nd HDMI port have not worked. I need a second monitor and can't get any of the other ports to work. Is this a video card/motherboard problem? The VGA monitor has been working with my old computer for years, so it isn't the cables. The motherboard is an MSI Z170-A Pro and the GPU is an EVGA GTX 1080. I have updated all the drivers I can think of. I went to the MSI website and found a driver titled "On-board VGA Drivers" but it said I didn't have the minimum requirements to download, which isn't true.

All GTX 1080's should have 3 Display Ports on it. You have a pretty beefy computer so you should consider hooking up you're monitors via Display Port. Maybe even consider buying some 144Hz monitors. I have two of http://pcpartpicker.com/product/rkphP6/asus-monitor-vg248qe paired with a GTX 1060 and the 144z refresh rate looks awesome. Is you're PC pre-built or did you build it yourself?

No I was incorrect, the ports from the motherboard work and the ports from the graphics card work.

Yes mine is pre built. I know my GPU has 1 HDMI, 1 DVI, and 3 other ports unknown to me.

Could you, please, restate the issue? What ports on the graphics card are you using and what ports on the motherboard? Which port does not work?

The 3 other ports are Display Port 1.4 which can support up to 8K UHD at 60Hz. Most newer GPU's have DisplayPort output and it's the recommended output type if you're using multiple monitors. Most motherboards will automatically disable intergrated graphics if a GPU is connected so that is most likely the reason there is no video output. You say you tried downloading the VGA drivers but you got an error saying you don't meet the minimum requirements, which may mean that your CPU doesn't support on board graphics. What CPU are you using?

I'm sorry I once again misstated, the motherboard ports do NOT work and the GPU ports DO work. I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm currently using an HDMI port from the GPU for one monitor and I was attempting to use a VGA port from the motherboard for the second monitor. The motherboard has a VGA, DVI and HDMI port and so far none of them have worked. I'm going to buy a VGA to DVI adapter today to see if the DVI port on my GPU will work.

My CPU is an Intel i7-6700K.

For the board's ports to work together with the card's ones, you have to enable in BIOS the IGD Multi-Monitor.
As for the DVI port on the card, it would work with an adapter only if DVI-I
If DVI-D, you'd need a converter.

You must enable intergrated graphics in the BIOS in order to use intergrated graphics along side your gpu. Also try installing https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26404/Intel-Graphics-Driver-15-45-?product=88195 if you haven't done so already.

My GPU is DVI-D and I just went to a NVIDIA website and it said that NVIDIA GPU's that use DVI-D can only support one monitor. This can't be true right? A great graphics card like the 1080 should be able to handle more than one monitor.

Just read this article regarding the DVI port on the 1080. Here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3068397/hardware/rip-vga-nvidias-geforce-gtx-1080-dumps-analog-support-following-intel-and-amds-lead.html

It does support more than one monitor, the problem is that the signal from DVI-D is digital, while VGA is analog, therefore a simple adapter does not work. You need a converter.

This worked, thank you very much!

Yep finally got it working with that, thanks! I'll also keep in mind about the DisplayPort 1.4, that'll be the port of the next monitor I get. The only reason I was so adamant about getting this VGA to work was because it's my only other monitor currently. But thanks!
