Send program files to first sectors

Hello,

My name's John. I've been a reader for quite a bit, especially when I get trouble with a computer or when I try to get a little bit more out of my system. I really appreciate every bit of advice given in these forums.

Unfortunately this time, I wasn't able to find the answer I was looking for. I was wondering if there was a good program to defrag and send program related files to the start of a disk, or rather close to the OS files, while pushing the multimedia files farther away. The point is to allow a faster access to program files without adding a partition to segregate file types (my girlfriend is kinda cold to the idea of partitioning her disk, she thinks it would be too much re-learning since she uses a lot the My Documents of Win7). I'm looking for something that would sort things kinda like this: |--Win7--|---Programs---|-- multimedia----|

nope, the closest I know of is short stroking, but that needs partitioning. 'Documents' the folder can easily be moved to a seperate partition/location. Alternatively install programs first then media files.

However anything you do will only give you 10% improvement, in the real world not enough to notice.

Also short stroking requires 2 HDDs and using Raid0, But does improve performance slightly.

Long time ago norton utilities had a defrag program that allow specifing which to place first, infact several options on ording - But then window 3.1 died out (LOL). Probably make the OS +Programs partition about 200->300 Gigs

The only way to keep the OS + programs on the outer portion of the platters is by partitioning it. And to Keep GF happy, move the My Document folder from "C" drive to "D" drive (may need to shift DVD drive leter to "E".

Some with SSDs move the my doc's folder to save space.

With windows 7, my wife liked vista winmail, so had to port that program over to windows 7.

Thanks Chief. I usually use 3 partitions (Win, programs, everything else) and it usually pays out, specially in times of format and with regards to disk fragmentation. I will apply your trick and she shouldn't notice a thing.
